Government has no authority to force anyone to do classes or get a permit to own a firearm
No one ever accidentally killed a loved one while at the voting booth. Not quite the same thing.
If it's anything like getting a driver's license it won't be that strict anyways.
HOWEVER, I do think it would be a scary door to open, especially in this post 9/11 world.
"Yes citizen your government offers comprehensive firearms training and licensing, you of course will have to submit to all searches of yourself and property including but not limited to your body cavities, family members body cavities, without the requirement of a warrant in perpetuity, you will need all weapons registered and inspected annually, and of course there are the fees required for each weapon's registration/inspection, permit to buy ammunition for each weapon, permit to carry each weapon, permit to fire each weapon, you understand of course it's for your own safety and well because terrorism."US Politics in three words - Divide and Conquer

A co-worker of mine has never shot a gun in his life, has no working knowledge of firearms, but now has his conceal carry permit and an AR-15 that just sits in his closet. That's fucked up.
