  • A four year olds letter to God...

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:

Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
    Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, ‘To Meredith’ in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, ‘When a Pet Dies.’ Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note: Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away. Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find. I am wherever there is love.
    Love, God

My mother is about as devout a Christian as you can imagine (Baptist). She doesn't drink, doesn't swear ... I'll still get a "first name/middle name" if I say damn or shit around her (at 36 years old).

I remember being 6 years old and upset the day after our family dog of many years (before me even) had died. "Mom, will I see Pee Wee in heaven?"

All I received was a matter-of-fact, "No, Jody, dogs don't have souls. Dogs don't go to heaven, you will never see Pee Wee again." Wow, tough love ... thanks mom.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Why do Christians feel the need to share all of these obviously made up stories? Not trying to start a fight, but stuff like this is posted all over facebook and I just don't get it. Is it the "feel good" factor?

Dang, man. I was about the same age when our dog died and asked my mom what happened when things died. She very neutrally explained the basic theology of God and heaven and that most people seemed to think this was what happened, but that no one knew.

Even at that age, with me believing that the 2mm of blanket cover in the middle of the night made me impervious to the monsters I knew were waiting inside my closet to tear me to sheds, my immediate reaction was not only of complete disbelief, but incredulity that anyone would believe something so obviously made up. A few years later when my oldest sister I rarely talk to went all bonkers being Born Again Christian, my initial impression was reinforced. Probably why I'm always pointing out logical fallacies; I had a lot of practice identifying them growing up.

I'm not trying to kill buzzes. I just want to know why. There are now two more similar stories in this forum.

                    Why doesn't anybody post this?

A loving wife and mother of two was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Despite years of treatment and countless prayers to heal her, she died. On the way home, her husband so distraught and sobbing with tears ran a red light and was T-boned by an 18-wheeler. The husband and daughters were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler survived, treated with minor wounds was so depressed that he took his own life months later leaving behind a stay-at-home wife and two children of their own. Praise Jesus.

                    THE END

                    ^Now THAT'S a buzzkill.
