Just another excuse for the government to take even more out of the economy and for these idiots in Washington, who have created this political class that doles out money to the government tit suckers, to gain even more power.
Shipping has absolutely nothing to do with it. By this logic, does that mean if I buy a couch from the local furniture store and have to have it delivered, I get to deduct the delivery fee from the sales tax?

Hey, not everyone pays 30+% of their income in taxes. The bankers and captains of industry pay less than 10%! We need to pick up the slack here people!

Retailers compete at the cost to get something in your hands, all costs included. I don't know many smart people who ignore any of the costs.

I have an idea, if local government is so concerned about business being at a disadvantage then why not lower taxes and spend less on useless bullshit?

                      BRILLIANT!!!

I agree completely, from a consumer standpoint it's all about the bottom dollar, but the gov doesn't care how they get to that bottom dollar. If you buy a $100 item, you pay tax on a $100 item, regardless if it's over-knighted for an additional $50, picked up from the local store, or shipped bulk freight.

I would also love to see the government help level the playing field by reducing taxes for brick & mortar stores, but we both know that'll never happen, they are only going to adjust the lower of the two up.

Although I agree with the concept of not taxing for online sales....I now usually pay taxes via Amazon.com

                            It's still cheaper than...

                            1. Most brick and mortar stores
                            2. Driving around trying to find what I want at 1 or more different stores

Of course this is going to happen... Hell Texas has lead the way with forcing amazon to collect sales tax. Technically, there has always been a requirement for Texas residents to pay use tax on goods purchased from retailers who did not collect sales tax. This is nothing new, it's just that use taxes are basically impossible to enforce compared to requiring the seller to collect.

As far this bill allowing states to now audit out of state businesses, that already happens. If a state thinks you have some type of nexus within their state they will come after you. Really, the key issue will be coming up with some uniformity across states to help reduce the administrative burden, it's not going to happen anytime soon I have feeling.
