More along the lines of: Islam has a history of permitting rape of non Muslims. Imams have the authority to 'update' the koran at will with statements that override the original texts. This rape happened in Dubai. The religion of Dubai is Islam. Therefore, it is a logical supposition that the attempted rapist is...Muslim based on the location, the religion of the area, the point of view on rape in Islam against infidels.

I'm far from infallible. Educate me on the failure of my logic because I do have days where the old brain doesn't function properly

        John lives in Dubai.

        John is Islamic.

Do you not see the disconnect? You're confusing a logical process with stumbling upon the correct conclusion through your own means.
That is literally a textbook example of a logical fallacy, lol.

You made a conclusion and are working your way backwards to support it. That's inherently illogical regardless of whether you've come to the correct conclusion or not.

You haven't a clue whether the gentleman is Muslim or not, but you've left not an ounce of possibility that he isn't.

You're also making the assumption that if he is Muslim and he did attempt to rape her that he did it in the name of Islam. Is it possible that he's just a shitty human being?

The Catholic church has a history of priests raping children; does every Catholic man who assaults a child do it because he's Catholic?

What you're applying is what you would describe as "common sense", and while you may come to the correct conclusions, logical precedent it does not make.

Literally the world 'literally' is the correct word to use here. I'm pretty sure if I tracked down my Intro to Logic textbook this exact example would be printed somewhere in those pages.

I took "Critical Thinking" which according to the course description makes me a formidable keyboard warrior:

              PHI 1307 Critical Thinking

1307 Critical Thinking (Cross-listed as MH 1307) The development of critical, coherent, and creative thinking, including understanding, analyzing, and evaluating the claims of others, organizing ideas clearly, and constructing sound arguments. Development of sensitivity to argumentation technique and to the language in which arguments are expressed, with particular attention to the persuasive techniques of advertising and other controversial issues in the mass media.

The sad thing is that when it comes to daily life, the only practical application I have found for things I learned in that class occur here, on a Mustang forum.

You'd be right. I remember that part of the class quite well.

I was in Dubai last summer. While there are definitely Islamic people and it is the main religion, not everyone is a practicing or hardcore Muslim. We didnt know what to expect after reading news stories about people being arrested for holding hands and what not. Adding up, it isnt like that at all. Some women wore burkas and some didnt. Women wearing burkas held hands with the men. Some women dressed like we do here while the man was wearing their white bedsheet as a gown. To assume that everyone is Muslim and that they all believe it is ok to rape women is nonsense and narrow minded.

And one more thing... Dubai imports so many workers as someone previously stated. I work with a few Indian nurses that have worked in Dubai. They also import manual labor from Pakistan and India like crazy. There have been plenty of shows on Discovery Channel about the insane growth and development of Dubai and they show how they import workers.

                    No fucking kidding.

Although, I will say that I've found logic/critical thinking classes to have a practical impact on an overarching scale; they're not really specifically applicable to any given scenario, but they're helpful in shaping your mindset to approach matters of dispute the right way (i.e. not coming to a conclusion and working your way backwards to support it).

Logic is the academic study of reason; it is not a label you throw on whatever half-baked argument you're making to enhance they way it sounds/looks on your computer screen.

Does Catholic doctrine permit the rape of children or do these priests do it in spite of their faith? That would be the difference. I did not work backwards to support my thought, I worked from available information forward. Absolutely possible he was just a POS. I can also only think of one religion that actually requires any accusation of rape to be backed by 4 men.

I did not say EVERYONE was Muslim. I said it's a predominantly Muslim country and Islam is the national religion. It is not narrow minded nor is it nonsense when their faith requires 4 men to back up a rape accusation and Imams who have the authority to alter the Koran have stated it is fine to rape non mulsim women and even children if you're in a tight spot fighting a war. They do these neat 1 day marriages that you get married to a kid, fuck them and then divorce them and go about your business.

One of the greatest nurses I work with is Muslim and is very strict in her faith in Islam. Her husband isnt out raping women.
