    Fair enough, but there are plenty of parents that would/do. Do you support that? (and yes, I've seen it) I'm sure in the parent's eyes it's needed for their life plans and to help them, just like a parent who would force their kid to enlist.

    Either way (college/military), if a kid does not want to go - they won't. They would probably just have to learn to make it on their own 100%. Also, neither is mutually exclusive from each other. A college person can join the military at a higher rank or as a full blown officer. A military person now may have the opportunity/money for college that they otherwise would not have.

    Getting off topic there, I just do not see the big deal. I think we all know several young folks who probably would've benefited well from being forced into service by their parents and with their parent's guidance helping them from being screwed. Personally, I know 3 young kids who considered, decided they'd get homesick and ended up getting over being home sick in prison. Smart, personable kids - but just no discipline.
