I have served, active US Marines for 4 years, and I have spent a great portion of my life in the same geographical location living along side troops. I consider what I do as a service to my country but more-so to the war fighter who has to live in these conditions. We do our best to make their experience as comfortable as possible. Before the: you do it for the money, shut up crowds; I came over here to make $15 an hour ($10 less than the job I left) and we WORK 84hr weeks.
I would encourage my son, if I had one, to educate himself as to the way men and the world really are. Of course, I would be there to teach him along the way. If he plans on joining the military I would support him but he would be educated first.
My daughter? Well, I cannot really say I would encourage but I would support her decision. However I will steer her early on towards education and a carrier outside of the services first.Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

I will councel my son that there are great life lessons to be learned in serving, but I will caution him to be leary of the politicians that will make life altering decisions for him.
Right now I am very distrustful of our Government. That distrust goes back to Clinton, GWB, and Obama. I could see a point in the future when more and more people tell their kids to avoid the military.

When/if I have kids, I will be there as a source of information and guidance for them, and will support any decision they make...as long as it's not to become a damned dirty hippie.
That being said, I wouldn't trade my time in the Navy for anything. I travelled more and learned more in that time than many will in a lifetime. I also never fired a shot in anger. I can honestly say that we helped more people than were hurt in any way."It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

I have already had this very talk with my son. He was looking at Marine Infantry. I fully respect his decision (even though I was an Army Tanker). My advice to him was to look at all of the different MOS options, to look at what he wanted to do after the military and try to find something that can help him along the way. This was my biggest regret in the MOS that I chose, I loved it and it was a lot of fun... But there is not much need for someone who can drive/ load/ shoot/ command a tank in the civilian world. I would love to see him consider Air Force or Coast Guard, as a parent I think he would be in a safer position there. But it is his decision and I will support him fully no matter what he does.
My Daughter is graduating in a couple months and I would have no problem with her serving either. I can not believe these 60% numbers that you posted. I never heard of any rapes in our support unit which had 20-30 females in it.

That's fucking retarded in my opinion.
BTW, naynay is a pussy, and Frost is a war mongerer.
I find you "opinion" insulting. Look out if some kid joins some branch for a few years, gets some great experiences, learns hardships and gets out appreciating somethings a little more than others. They just wasted their fucking lives!Originally posted by MR EDDU defend him who use's racial slurs like hes drinking water.

My kid joined the army and has been in almost 2 years. I hoped he would join the Marine Corps, but I let him make his own choice. And yes, I was in the Marines from feb 87 until Feb 92.
I remind him often that he is there to protect our freedom from enemies foreign and domestic and that he in no way should take up arms against his own country.Originally posted by soapi can fix anything from a broken tractor to an aching pussy!!!
