BTW I failed to mention the excellent post by jyro. I'll admit, I teared up quite a bit reading the original post as well as the D Magazine article. Both are good reads.

I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy reading American Sniper. The story was sorta all over. The content was good, I just didn't like the way it was delivered but maybe it was just me. I thought the book by Marcus Luttrell (spelling?) was much better. Either way, when I read he had a book signing here in Oak Cliff (well technically West Dallas) at Ray's Sporting Goods I wish I had known. I would have missed work for that.

I agree that American Sniper jumped around a bit, but the heart of the story made me upset with myself for doing so little (comparitively) during my two tours. I was unable to make it any signings either and really wish I could have so I could have shook his hand and said thank you.
Just read the article posted. It was a great read. A lot of it was summarization of the book, but a great read none the lessLast edited by black2002ls; 03-26-2013, 08:40 PM.Originally posted by LeahBest balls I've had in my mouth in a while.

Thanks Jose, hope your doing well
I haven't even thought about reading Chris's book yet. I'm too torn-up over his and Chad's death. I didn't know Chris personally but I remember him as a 10 year old playing little league baseball with my son Chris. I didn't even connect the two till after his death. I was friends with Chad Littlefield. That last article was a great read. I sent the writer ( michael.mooney@dmagazine.com. ) a thank you.Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
Be honest, even if it hurts.

I found Chris Kyle's book much better than the Luttrell. Typical Navy Seals when they put a book together 90% of the book is "I love me" "BUD/S was ........". Don't get me wrong it is nice to read to know but when every book you pick up is loaded with "so there I was on the Grinder....then we sat in the surf.....then there were the boats....and the comradery..."
Chris Kyle's book hit BUD/S and moved on.
Reading Damn Few by Rorke Denver right now and have Fearless by Eric Blehm on my shelf to read next. Damn Few is 120 pages in and he is still in BUD/S 1999. Dude you had a 12+ year career as a SEAL tell me more.
Kyle's book hit all the key points. Family. Love for his brothers in arms more than just, yep we served with this dude or that dude. Kyle had actual familial love for everyone of them.
For perspective 90% of what I read are nonfiction military based and surrounding Afghanistan mostly but most of your books by SEALs are Iraq. Luttrell's first book being the exception. I enjoy reading about things that have happened where I have been and while I was there.Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

It's laughable but soldiers dying, kids and dogs are about the only things that do that to me.

Luttrell's first book was better than his second. Both good books but Lone Survivor was better. The Only Thing Worth Dying For by Eric Blehm (same guy who wrote Fearless, he was asked by Adam Brown's parents to write a book about their son) is by far the best book I have ever read. It is the story about ODA 574 and how 11/12 guys almost won the war in the south with Karzai. There is an hour long interview with Blehm and Jason Amerine (captain of the team at the time) about the book.
I read about 20 nonfiction books the past year or two about Afghanistan and some on Iraq. It is amazing to hear about the things our heroes have gone through and how things have changed over time. F-in politics are getting our gas killed faster than the enemy.
Chris Kyle was not the only one treated like this, the local community treated Luttrell like a king when he came back and helped Luttrell out when helping out a fallen soldier.
