  • Obama's Golf Weekend With Tiger Cost As Much As 341 Federal Workers Furloughed

In a sharply written statement, Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama blasts President Obama for campaigning and not governing. He calls Obama's response to the sequestration "the most cynical behavior I have seen during my time in Washington."
    Obama

Adds the senator, "Replacing the sequester would require the President to save $85 billion out of a $3,500 billion federal budget. One would think that any President would leap at the opportunity to make government more effective and responsive. But what does the President do instead? He says Republicans are ‘cutting vital services for children’ in order to ‘benefit the well-off and well-connected.’ This has been the strategy now for years: block any attempt to reform the government and then relentlessly attack the reformers. Does any lawmaker, reporter, or citizen believe that the only way to save taxpayer dollars is to hurt children, that every government program is effective and helpful and not one penny is wasted?"

Sessions is the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee.

"While the White House operatives may think this attack is clever, it betrays an astonishing elitism: the federal government is perfect and requires no reform. That is why they have no plan to make our government leaner and more efficient. The President had 18 months to develop reforms to improve the government, but instead he announced furloughs of federal workers as a political cudgel. Yet, his golf weekend at the yacht club with Tiger Woods cost taxpayers over a million dollars—enough money to save 341 federal workers from furlough," Sessions writes.

"These workers know firsthand how much waste and inefficiency exists in the government. Our Budget Committee office will look for a way to solicit federal employees to send suggestions for how to save money in their departments, agencies, and divisions. What is better? To furlough someone or to empower them to make their office more efficient?

"Now, we learn that the President is going to submit his budget plan—which contains his recommendations to Congress, the reason the law requires it to be submitted early in February before our budget work begins—on March 25th. Yet he will be submitting it after the House and Senate have produced a budget proposal and adjourned for Easter. So while the President speaks of his deep concern for American workers and families, he fails to even submit to Congress his financial plan to help those workers and families. Why then doesn’t the President furlough his entire 500 person staff at the Office of Management and Budget instead of threatening teachers and law enforcement personnel? The budget deals with more than just deficits. It is the chief executive’s plan for American prosperity. What does it mean that he doesn’t want to lay that out? He is the CEO of the Executive Branch and every cabinet official and government employee answers to him. It is his duty to the American people to be the person advancing reform, not blocking it.

"Also at issue is the fact that our massive federal government is, right now, creating poverty and hurting families. Look at cities like Baltimore, Chicago, and Detroit. Raising taxes—instead of reforming government—denies struggling Americans the help they need. There is nothing just or virtuous about protecting a stale welfare state that is failing the people it is supposed to help. President Obama is defending the bureaucracy at the expense of the people.

"It is time for the President to end the permanent campaign and work with both parties to make this government work better."

$2,932.55 per government employee? We'll call it $3,000 per employee. It does say "over a million dollars".

Granted, I do not like anything Obama does. However, methinks there is a bit of sensationalism that completely discredits the chance of this article to do any damage.

You also have to figure the 180k an hour to run AF1, and that he can't go anywhere on his own. A second plane follows with the beast and other armed vehicles.

Then the article needed that bit of info to carry its message.

I'm aware of how much money goes into paying all of the debts of a weekend venture. The general public needs a detailed list for all expenditures.

From the sound of the article, Obama had a cheap weekend.

You won't get it. Expenses on protecting the president are not public record.

Well, we have a round about figure of what AF1 costs. We have a rough estimate of how much Secret Service costs. We know that there is a staff that has to get paid.

All of these figures could have been conservatively reported to relay a better message. Hell, how much do his Hawaii trips cost? We were told a fairly accurate figure on that. We know how much he pays his golf coach, even though that should be paid out of pocket.

Not to mention you have to lock down every road he's going to be on, so that's law enforcement, shut down air travel on his arrival and departure, close down and secure any property he is on and shut down airspace above all areas he's going or is going to go

He's an academic with an anti American chip on his shoulder. He doesn't actually know how to run something, probably couldn't run a hot dog cart, but he will pump his chest & hang blame on anyone standing in the way of his railroad efforts, anyone offering up a true solution.

Why doesn't the Tea Party have a PAC running the most clever, the most undeniably truthful & damning ads, coloring all dem's with the stain of the current toxin-in-chief? This guy is straight up rotten!
Ronald Reagan:"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it."

Yep just like when Bushie was in Crawford all those times. People had to move their airplanes just so they could fly them.

In His eight years as pres. Bushie took 977 days Vacation or 32% of his time in office.

Obama as of December 2012 has taken 90 days.
First, it should be noted that this question is political in nature, which means that partisans will say Mr. Obama was right, while detractors will say he was wrong. Further, this is a debate that has gone on for decades: does the president take too many days off, is the First Lady too extravagant, are taxpayer dollars being wasted, etc. One should also keep in mind that presidents are never truly "on vacation." Even when they take their family somewhere, they must be in constant communication with their staff and step up to lead if an emergency takes places. That said, as of the end of December 2012, most reliable sources said Mr. Obama had taken between 84 and 90 vacation days. This is not an unusual number. Other presidents have taken more, some have taken fewer. According to CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller, considered the unofficial presidential statistician, In his first three years in office, Mr. Obama took nine vacations. By the end of August, 2010, Knoller said, Obama spent about 48 days on vacation since he became president. Knoller also said, in comparing presidential vacations, that the most days in recent memory were taken by President George W. Bush: he spent 879 vacation days during his eight years in office. But here again, the partisans want to weigh in, saying Mr. Bush was on vacation too much-- when in fact, despite being away from the White House and spending his time at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, he was still conducting official business on some occasions; on others, however that claim is harder to defend. But the point is that many of his critics asked the same questions now being asked about President Obama. Rather than debating who was better or who took more "time off," a more important conversation is about whether even the Leader of the Free World deserves some time with his family. And if so, how much time should be given before partisans start complaining? There is nothing excessive in the number of vacation days President Obama took during his first term. And turning it into a comparison of Bush vs Obama probably won't yield anything other than further partisan claims that one guy wasted our money and the other did not.

That information had to have been changed. Obama had that many days vacation before his second year in his first term.

Bush bounced between Camp David and Crawford (Hometown). Obama takes the family to Hawaii. Naturally, $15-$25 million a pop for Hawaii will cost more than Camp David, which is already in the President's budget or Crawford, Bush's ranch.

So, to answer your question. Obama's trips cost more than Bushes.

Obama is a very rich person and he will spend like a rich person all while telling the sheep how he is trying to help their broke asses. Anybody with a brain knows he is a bullshitter and that he could care less about the poor ignorant. Its funny how the media never reports how much money he wastes on himself flying around etc. One meal probably costs as much as one of his sheeples car yet they still believe he is trying to help them out. Just shows how easily manipulated people can be.

Show me something that isn't wikipedia, a sourch I can change at will. Obama hasn't let AF1 cool off since he got in office and I don't recall Mrs. Bush taking separate vacations from George at taxpayer expense. Oh, and Bush stopped golfing because it sent the wrong impression of a wartime president. And we also had 4-6% unemployment and under 10 trillion in debt

Since you like numbers: Games of golf Bush played in 8 years: 24
Games Obama has played since 2009: 115
