Being proud of service is expected, but not always of merit. I've only had one friend that was in the Marines and he never wanted to talk about it. Through other friends he had around a dozen confirmed kills. He never wanted to talk about it. I have a feeling that Marines that saw action are like other soldiers. They just don't want to talk about it, they want that to be another life, far away from their friends and families.

The ones that brag about it, haven't done shit.

He is saying that alot of guys wanted to be Marines but felt that maybe they couldnt do it so they went with another branch. Make no mistake, Marine Corps bootcamp is hardcore. I went in at 17 weighing 150lbs and 3 months later graduated weighing 172lbs.....and that wasnt fat. You run and run and run and run and run. You push yourself to the furthest limits that your body can handle and then you push it a bit further. It is physically and mentally the most demanding thing I have done and set the standard for what I have based anything else "hard" in my life. I hate talking to people about the Corps because it is honestly a boring subject. Make no mistake though, every kid you see come out of bootcamp has zero problems stomping the shit out of the enemy and will do it ferociously. If you have not been through this training, then no amount of explaining it actually compares to it. The drill instructors have mastered the art of turning out stone cold killers that are some of the best at what they do. I was in before they came out with The Crucible so i have no idea what boot is like nowadays but i can assure you that the DI's arent making soft men. Our traditions and training has been passed down from generation to generation since 1775.
If you want to see a small example of perfection, watch a graduating class march across the grinder.

                    • Oh he had me running everywhere and I was first picked for all duties. It was always "Hey Ranger, let's get moving. Come on, let's add some weight to your ruck. Come on, you don't need that chow! Move!"

Hated it but I was dropping nickle runs without breathing hard and got to Korea in great shape

Hadn't even graduated Army Basic Training and they call you Ranger? That is funny. When I went to MCRD San Diego for Boot Camp I was Recruit the entire time. Couldn't even refer to myself as a Marine until I graduated. This goes back to the tradition thing Jester talks about.

Oh and I went in weighing 130 at 17 and came out weight 135. I forged and hid a double rats tag and still couldn't eat enough. Oh, how I miss my youthful days.

and TWO BIG RED STRIPES on their PT gear to humiliate them some more. I thought it was funny how they have the skinny guys painting the stripes while the fat ones got to watch.
