Packing Heat with Hot Coffee: ‘Gun Owners Support Starbucks Day’
February 22, 2013 10:53 AM
STERLING, Va. (CBSDC) — If you enjoy packing heat while sipping a hot cup of coffee, Friday is your day.
Firearms owners and gun rights advocates are heading to local coffee shops to celebrate “Gun Owners Support Starbucks Day.” It’s their way of saying ‘thank you’ to the Seattle-based coffee franchise for — as they see it — not infringing on their Second Amendment rights.
By trying to stay out of the gun control debate, the popular coffee chain has actually found itself in the thick of it. A spokesperson for Starbucks tells the Washington Post that the company’s position is for stores to comply with the local laws where they are located.
“Some anti-gunners wanted citizens such like myself kicked out of Starbucks for carrying a gun and Starbucks said, ‘Hey, we’re here to sell cakes and coffees,’ ” Ed Levine, founder of Virginia Open Carry, told WNEW’s John Domen.
When the complainants attempted to organize a boycott of the coffee chain, the gun enthusiast jumped into action. Levine organized a day of support for the franchise known for its loyal following and potent java.
The inaugural event went well and participants are hoping to make it an annual tradition.
“I’ve got a pocket full of $2 bills that signify the Second Amendment,” Levine said at a Starbucks in northern Virginia. “We tip them and we show them we support them, supporting us.”
It’s no coincidence the event is being held on February 22. Event organizers chose the day for its trio of 2′s as a way to pay homage to the Second Amendment.
The event’s Facebook page explains: “The ’2/22′ represents both the specific day of this holiday each year, and also represents the three reasons that the Founders enshrined the pre-existing right into our founding document:
2 = defense of ourselves.
2 = defense of our families and communities.
2 = defense of our great country.”
“Gun Owners Support Starbucks Day” runs through 11 p.m. Friday.
