I read this story earlier this week and was instantly annoyed. He knew what he was signing up for, and he knew what he was doing getting out before his 20 years. It sickens me that he turns to the media with a woe-is-me attitude that does not reflect what I would expect out of a hero of his caliber.

The military as a whole makes no effort what so ever to hide your benefits from you. It all publicly published. However, you do have to make an effort on your own to seek such things out as they aren't always broadcast to your face. As a PL, I made sure I knew what I could get my Soldiers. Learning that took a significant amount of effort, and it wasn't even for myself. Don't excuse laziness and disregard as the military's fault.

I do agree that the VA is unnecessarily convuluted and takes more effort than should be necessary to navigate...but you have to at least fucking try.

Exactly. Retirement has been 20 years for as long as I can remember, they didn't just up and change it one night. I appreciate the guy shooting OBL and his service, but he shouldn't get special treatment above and beyond the norm because of it.

I think they did change it. I'm seeing if you want 100% of your pay, you have to put in 40 years.

20 years you get between 40 and 50% of your base pay with 2.5% added each year after that. With his injuries (torn this and that) without knowing anything more than that I'd guess he'd be what? Group 3 for care?

16 years isn't 20. Sucks but he chose to bail with only 4 years left. He could have pushed for a desk job or an instructor job and rode out his last 4 years.

I hope his VA stuff gets pushed though and he gets what he deserves but ya know.

I've been though the out processing crap twice now and they make it a point in those classes to tell you EVERYTHING you rate and how to get it. Sounds like he chose not to go to those classes.

I think they are generally paying for "information leading to the arrest". What they need is the location of the person, that is what they pay big money for.

That same Osama Bin Laden? The Shooter popped OBL twice between the running-lights and now he's just another veteran to ignore.

So all the other Soldiers and Marines...? He was the right guy in the right place, not to say he wasn't a hell of a SEAL, but there are many guys in this fight and many if not all contribute. You nailed it on the head with the classes the military makes you take before you get out. Even back in '98 when I EAS'd we had a week's worth of that shit.

He should not have gotten out with 4 years left. He could have written his own ticket for his next 4 till retirement and networked into a 6 digit income in the mean time. He can't be as helpless as the article makes him out to be. It is just not in those guys typical personalities.
