Just looking through the FBI's statistics myself..
In 2011, there were 12664 murders in the US. There were 6220 handguns involved in those murders. 323 RIFLES were used compared to 356 Shotguns..
728 used no weapon at all. Just hands, feet, fists, pushing, etc....
One statistic I'm looking for. Of the weapons used in these murders, how many of those weapons were illegally obtained by current laws.

Stevo
Chicago had over 500 murders in 2012.
Also, Illinois has only one major metro area with a population over 250K. That is Chicago with about 2.7million people. The suburbs around Chicago are the bulk of their larger municipalities but none of them are even close to 250K.
Texas has NINE municipalities with populations over 250K.
Houston 2,099,451
San Antonio 1,327,407
Dallas 1,197,816
Austin 790,390
Fort Worth 741,206
El Paso 649,121
Arlington 365,438
Corpus Christi 305,215
Plano 259,841
Houston had 198 homicides in 2011.
San Antonio had 89
Dallas had 133
Austin had 28
I pulled these from http://www.city-data.com/city/Texas.html
Obviously the murder rate throughout the rest of Illinois is vastly lower but it is also much more sparsely populated. Coincidentally (or not) it is also much more politically conservative.

Found this.. Just for comparison to Illinois.
The Murder/Manslaughter rates for Illinois is 5.6 per 100000 people in 2011..
The Murder/Manslaughter rates for Texas is 4.4 per 100000 people.. which was a drop from 2010.
The national Murder/Manslaughter rate is 4.7 per 100000 people..
The state with the lowest rate is Hawaii with 1.2 (so why do the Hawaii Five-0 guys appear so busy?)
New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont all had a rate of 1.3
The state with the highest rate is Louisiana with 11.2 (there goes my home state again.. getting 1st place for the wrong things)
The District of Columbia's rate is 17.5 (with the strongest gun control laws in the country)
BTW, stay the fuck away from Puerto Rico. The rate is 30.6 WTF?!?!
