  • Detroit Councilwoman to Obama: We voted for you, now bail us out

Reminds me of that quote (one of several) from I belive Benjamin Franklin, “Democracy will last until the people realize that they can vote themselves into money”. Something along those lines.
I belive this is the second group to make this demand since his re-election.

A Detroit city council member is asking President Obama to bail out the financially troubled city in return for residents’ overwhelmingly supporting his successful re-election bid.

“There ought to be a quid pro quo," said Councilwoman JoAnn Watson, according to My Fox Detroit.

Nearly 75 percent of voters in Wayne County, which includes Detroit, voted for Obama on Nov. 6.

    - Councilwoman JoAnn Watson

"After the election of Jimmy Carter, the honorable Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington, D.C., and came home with some bacon," Watson said. "That's what you do," Watson said.

Young was Detroit's mayor for 20 years and served as vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1977 to 1981.

The White House has expressed no plans to bail out the cash-strapped city that some experts say could go bankrupt by the end of the year.

Michigan officials began state oversight of Detroit six months ago to help the city avoid bankruptcy. But the city-state advisory board says Mayor Dave Bing, a Democrat, needs to move faster in his reform of city agencies and services to avert the city’s financial meltdown.

According to My Fox Detroit, the federal government has helped cities in the past, including President Gerald Ford in 1975 extending more than $2 billion in credit to New York City to help it avoid a financial collapse.

Just goes to show that liberty is not synonymous with democracy.

The majority oppressing the minority is not freedom.

Democracy is tyranny of the majority. That's why we have a Republic

No, it wasn't. Even if it had literally been what its name declared it as, it still wouldn't be.

                        I'm not arguing that.

                        Agreed.

I just wanted to separate the terms, liberty and democracy/republic that are used almost synonymously. That propaganda is all over the media. Liberty can be found in all types of government. We are not a "free" (lol) society because of our particular style of government. We are free because a group badasses got together and decided to remove a government that had become tyrannical. The governing style that was choosen gridlocked the encroachment of liberty.

Just like the Declaration of Independence states, we are endowed with unalienable rights. No government can grant these rights, as they are part of our conscious and free will. A government, as shown throughout history, has always limited rights, and can only grant rights that it had already taken away in the first place.

So don't be fooled into believing we are free because of our democratic republic style of governing.

What we need to be doing is protesting the execution of Americans by our own government, the suspension of Posse Comitatus, and other hideous acts.

Right. So, what are you doing to ensure these freedoms and liberties?

And we don't have a Democratic Republic. We have a Constitutional Republic that elects it's leaders democratically. HUGE difference

                            Point taken.

I've gone to a few protests, but I enjoy informing much more. I wouldn't call go far and call it debating though. I show my buddies on the left the paradox of civil liberties with limited economic liberties, and show my right leaning friends the paradox of economic liberties with limited civil.

We need to realise we've been conditioned to choose an ideological side, and demonize the other. We need to be uniting, not taking party sides. There is no left-right,authoritarian-libertarian 2 dimensional spectrum. It's only a sliding scale of liberty vs. tyranny. It's literally that simple.

Exposing this paradigm is the most effective tool, as it doesn't attack any particular idea or person, and therefore does not inflame and shut the discussion down. Proving or disproving particular points is extremely hard with an unwilling individual, but calling into question paradoxes and leaving it at that is easy,

Actually, for me it's simple. Those who obey the constitution are friends or at least allies. Those who would violate it, enemies.
