Losing the Big E takes us down to 10, but the Lincoln is being taken out of service for 4 years for refueling. Which will have us at 9 until the Gerald Ford comes into service in 2015.

Losing 2 carriers is devastating considering the OPTEMPO that our guys are working in right now.

TR is refueling right now. Then the Lincoln goes in.

Yep, Congress had to approve the reduction from 10 so there are going to be less than 10 until Ford comes in.

This seems to be really difficult to understand.

You realize we have the ability to end life as we know it on this planet, right? I'd say we're prepared plenty, especially if we're still trying to burn through weapons that were made over 50 years ago. Defense spending should be one of the top cuts in the budget. It's completely ridiculous to fork out that much cash when our economy is grinding to a halt and face no credible threat that we couldn't obliterate in 5 minutes if we were serious about it and stopped worrying about the nightly news.

Entitlements should be eliminated, politicians healthcare and retirement should be eliminated. Hell everything in our government should be eliminated before you take 1 penny from defense.

The idea was to have 11 carriers. 10 operational and one being refueled/refit while the the other 10 were combat ready. It takes a lot of time to refuel and refit those bad boys so you need a big buffer to keep enough carrier groups at sea to keep our presence while still being able to allow your crews to come home every now and then.

What is all that defense doing for us right now? Because apparently a lot of it is sitting in a box for 50 years before it is used.

I agree that our defense is a bit excessive. It wouldn't hurt to cut the Pentagon's budget and I am all for that as long as none of it comes out of benefits for veterans or anyone in the military. It isn't going to hurt to not make as much hardware.

Here is the flip side of that though, I don't think we have the manufacturing base to start making shit overnight. And these weapons are not easy to manufacture.

Waiting for a rainy day. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Yup. Cutting defense spending isn't going to hurt us now short term but WHEN (not if) something jumps off we're gonna have a bear of a time spooling that manufacturing back up.

Look at the 5.56 ammo debacle part way into the war. We couldn't load enough ammo at the start of the war we were havin to buy ammo from other NATO countries to make up the deficit.

We were able to manufacture 1 billion rounds a year at the start of the war. When the war was in full swing the Army alone was burning that in training.

It took us a while to expand be lake city plant enough to make enough.
