The UFA is a non-profit advocacy organization representing the health, safety and interests of New York City Firefighters and the citizens they are sworn to protect.

I'm sure you can figure it out. Oh, and it's hilarious that you didn't know the FD has a union.

                    • I can appreciate that, but I want a vacation house and I want to be able to travel. I don't buy new vehicles or finance mcmansions, but I am trying to get money while the getting is good.

I just chuckle knowing that I probably work twice as many hours as they do. I've sat in on plenty of hiring sessions for the railroad and you wouldn't beleive the amount of people that get up and walk out once they are told they will be working 12hr shifts if not more, working every 10hrs, be on call 24/7 working nights, weekends, and holidays. This is after they are told how much they will be getting paid, what the health care and retirement are like. The money doesn't matter. They hear 80hr plus work weeks and they hit the door.
I agree. My job requires travel to all 50 states and roughly 6 mos worth of time away from home. Typically, I'm only gone for 5-7 days at a time. The other half of the year, I'm at home doing whatever the hell I want. I'm paid salary non-exempt (salary for the first 8hrs of every day and OT afterwards) so I'm being paid whether I'm at home or on the road. Honestly, there's very little to complain about. The last three young guys we've hired haven't worked out for shit. Complain about everything and eventually get canned for not showing up or some other dumbfuckery. It's not even hard work (electronics/software/networking mostly) so really no excuse in my mind.

For the record, I'm not union but there are guys who do a very similar function for the same company that are. NYC and New England mostly. The New England Union doesn't take advantage of the company too badly and they are much better protected from benefit cost increases, pay cuts, etc. than I am. My option every year is to pay more for healthcare or GTFO, basically. Lol

In contrast, the NYC crew is a fucking disgrace. Ive seen those guys milk a 5-day job for a month and somehow write off 100+ hours of OT in the process. Just goes to show not all unions are the same....
