Someone else mentioned college being a waste and I totally agree. Unless you're going to be a doctor, nurse, engineer, ect... college is a lie that has been retold for the past 50 years. That's why plumbers, electricians, hvac guys, oil field, union workers and anyone that is willing to work hard and get dirty makes more money than most college grads. I think my dad said it best. With some sweat, a little common sense, and a willing to make a buck, anyone can make 100k a year. It's not that hard. I laugh my ass off at the managers at my job that hire out right out of college. I make over 2x what they make and they get treated like shit from all angles. I've been asked several times to go into management and my reply is always the same. Why would I take a pay cut, pay more for my healthcare, have shittier insurance, and on top of that get treated like shit. No thanks!!!! I'll stick to running trains.

Just for the record, how many hours you work does not show work ethic or more specifically, "how hard of a worker you are." Anyone can show up to the job to twiddle their thumbs.

I can watch paint dry for a whole week with only taking a nap here and there, that doesn't mean I am the hardest mother fucking worker on the planet.

Another example, I know GM guys who would "work" tons of hours, and 90% of that "ton of hours" was watching TV. Surely, I am not insinuating you watch TV all day long, but your analogy needs a little fine tuning.

Hell, the news had GM employees right after teh bailout sitting in the parking lot smoking pot and drinking beer on their lunch breaks. Yep, hard working.

Now, I agree with FT. College degrees have been oversold. You have people getting degrees in women studies and art history and music appreciation. It's been sold as you have to have a degree to do anything and it's a lie. Some people just need to go to a trade school and learn a trade or apprentice somewhere. Not everyone is going to make the Fortune 500 and that's okay. We need ditch diggers, we need tire changers and cashiers.

Someone get a rope!!!! I always laugh when someone spouts off the stereotypical "union workers are lazy." I just chuckle knowing that I probably work twice as many hours as they do. I've sat in on plenty of hiring sessions for the railroad and you wouldn't beleive the amount of people that get up and walk out once they are told they will be working 12hr shifts if not more, working every 10hrs, be on call 24/7 working nights, weekends, and holidays. This is after they are told how much they will be getting paid, what the health care and retirement are like. The money doesn't matter. They hear 80hr plus work weeks and they hit the door.

I don't know what industries like the oil field and the railroad are going to be doing soon. The ones that require fucked up hours, travel, crappy working conditions ect. I'm not that old and I guess I was born in the last generation of people that actually have a half ass decent work ethic and will show up to work. Now days these 18 to 24 year old kids are a joke. You're lucky if you can get them to work 2 or 3 days a week. Most the guys the railroad hires these days are late 30s to early 40s. They actually want to work and you can depend on them to show up. They've even hired quite a few in their 50s. I think those guys should have their heads examined. I understand if you work out here all your life and your use to the bullshit, but I'd be damned if I came out here at 50 and put up with this crap. Especially after being use to having weekends off and never working nights.

Times are tough... I feel for people who have to enter a new field and get their ass whipped that late in life, but at least they're doing something...

As for the youth not being willing to work? I agree, but there are still lots of young "ruralites" who are willing to bathe in drilling mud for 14 12's straight in order to get somewhere in life. Seen it many times over the past 5-6yrs and it's given me a small glimmer of hope vs. when I lived in the metroplex and saw all of the future baristas acting like their shit didn't stink
