So, a kid mumbles or thinks "God", not even in the context of religion, in a school in Haystraw, KS and the ACLU has a collective aneurysm over it, and yet this (the teaching about islam) is probably going on in many more places than just Hurst, TX and they don't say a word? I think that is very telling.

Yeah and then putting a spin on it also pisses me off. I CAN understand teaching the basic principles and thought process of all religions. The more I learn, the more I feel like I know about what's going on. However, at the end of the day most/all religious wars seem to be mostly for money/power.

Understand, as a Catholic I would want the reality of past violence taught too. All this, mainly to learn from history and show what is pointless in the long term - even if it is an elective...since at the end of the day it's not critical for a HS kid to grasp it all compared to math/science..etc. (going to war for church as opposed to country - there is a difference)

If bullshit is going to be taught keep it out of schools altogether.

As opposed to your crap and dumbassery demonstrated so aptly here in this gem of a post, we presume?

This is a political issue, get over it.

only thing they should teach kids in school about religion is how all of them are scare tactics to control the masses

Religion is part of culture, like it or not. Geography is a study of people, places and culture; leaving out religion would make that study incomplete.

Choose to believe whatever you would like, but knowing about the religious beliefs of the people of the world is not a bad thing. We did it in school, my teacher had a copy of the Bible, Karan, and any other religious texts he could get his hands on. He had a full class speech about how this was important, and how he didn't want to have us feeling like he was promoting religion at all, that he was functionally atheistic. Looking back, it was one of the best and most memorable sections of study to date.

And yes, plenty of parents threw a fit each year. They were allowed to pull their students from the class and they had an alternate assignment they could do, but none of the parents did after a chat with the teacher and administration.

If it is done equally and historically, I dont' see an issue. When you start making kids take a test where you write "There is no god but Allah", then we come to an issue

This fucking thread has my head spinning like a top.

OP, if this is really going on and not some made up stuff, contact the freedom from religion foundation, they can help.
