Can't afford teachers, but can spend 300k on this BS AND the fees and costs of keeping it working, keeping the system updated and so forth.

This is my beef with it. You teach your child your phone number. You teach your child their address. Is it really that difficult to teach them their ID number? When public schools are facing budget crunches, $300k on something as ridiculous as a biometric scanner is ridiculous.

You could be REALLY nuts and hand them a card with a barcode and a picture on it. You can't use it if it's not your picture. I just prevented people from having your kid's fingerprints, invading privacy and have streamlined it

My kids' district does this for middle and high schoolers. The primary schoolers memorize their numbers.

When I was in school, we told them our last name and last 4 and they checked the box, took the money and you went on.

I remember just paying money and going for food.

I was a dumb ass and had my phone number and address memorized in kindergarten. If I could do it, any kid could and if there has to be this accountability...do it.

Regarding the kids forgetting their code. I've got a great idea to get around that. Why don't we embed a chip in their arm or put a number on their forehead. Just to make things go a little quicker. ;-) How does that sound?

How can you ask for a increase every year like school systems do if you have anything left over the previous year? It's such a common practice all school districts have to rent warehouse space to store all the unused items from years past, ever seen pallets 4 foot tall of brand new 5 year old laptops still in plastic, I have, pallets of Cisco routers sitting unused brand new from years ago. Whole warehouses full of things obsolete that their afraid to sell off because they wasted so much money. It pisses me off.

NORTH CAROLINA - A North Carolina grandmother is very upset after her granddaughter’s home-made lunch was taken away at school.

School officials said it wasn't nutritious enough.

It happened to a 5-year-old pre-k student. The student's lunch was taken away and she was forced to eat cafeteria chicken nuggets.

The girl’s original lunch consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich on white wheat bread, potato chips, a banana and apple juice.

The assistant superintendent of the school system says he agrees that the lunch was healthy, but he says it was missing milk, a key part of what is considered to be a healthy meal under state guidelines.

What happens when the kid is allergic or intolerant to milk?

Scanning a palm is no faster than having the lunch attendant type in a 5 or 6 digit student ID or looking up the student by last name.
I don't know if it's a handheld scanner or they pass their hands over it, but it's definitely not going to be slower than the lunch attendant entering a student ID or name.

Yeah, that's a whole 6-10 teachers for one year!

Have you ever used a biometric scanner? There is a lot of margin for electronic failure. The crux of technology is that it's wonderful when it works and a complete PITA when it doesn't.

In my experience, it's almost always operator error, sometimes hardware failure, but never software error.
