  • Afghan Allies Threatened Marines Before Shootings

This is the full story plus some from this thread.
Looks like they are on track to hit us 60 times or more this year using this same tactic. I am actually looking forward to going back in January. http://news.yahoo.com/man-afghan-uniform-kills-nato-member-151717548.html

Looks like an armed ANP allowed to have a weapon on the base walked into a mass gathering area, in this case the gym and opened fire.

The grieving father of a Marine shot to death by an Afghan wearing a police uniform said his son was threatened earlier by another Afghan army officer and feared for his life.

Lance Cpl. Gregory T. Buckley wrote of the threat and his concerns in a four-page letter home shortly before he was killed on Aug. 10 in the Sangin district of Afghanistan’s southwestern Helmand province.

“My son said ‘Daddy, I’m scared,’” Greg Buckley Sr. told WCBS-TV. “I didn’t tell my wife or my boys but he said ‘Dad I’m scared. I don’t want to be here no more. Something could happen to me.”

Buckley, 21, of Oceanside, N.Y., on Long Island, Staff Sgt. Scott E. Dickinson, 29, of San Diego, Calif., and Cpl. Richard A. Rivera Jr., 20, of Ventura, Calif., were killed when an Afghan police officer carrying an AK-47 rifle walked into a Marine gym and opened fire.

“Get the rest of those boys out of there,” Buckley’s father told the New York Daily News. “He had only four months left on his tour. There’s no purpose for us being there.”

The three slain Marines had been serving with the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force based in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

Three other Marines serving with a Special Operations unit were killed on the same day Aug. 10 in the Sangin district of Helmand province in a similar incident in what the Pentagon is now calling an “insider attack” by another rogue Afghan police officer.

Capt. Matthew P. Manoukian, 29, of Los Altos Hills, Calif., Gunnery Sgt. Ryan Jeschke, 31, of Herndon, Va., and Staff Sgt. Sky R. Mote, 27, of El Dorado, Calif., were shot to death after a routine meeting and a meal with local Afghan officials to discuss their concerns, U.S. military officials said.

The three had multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and were assigned to the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Jeschke, a 12-year Marine veteran and first degree black belt in martial arts, was quoted in the book “Generation Kill,” by Rolling Stone reporter Evan Wright, and was later portrayed in the “Generation Kill” HBO series on the Marines during the Iraq invasion.

The book noted Jeschke’s reaction when an Iraqi girl was killed after the car in which she was riding failed to stop at a Marine roadblock:

"War is either glamorized -- like we kick their ass -- or the opposite -- look how horrible, we kill all these civilians," Jeschke was quoted as saying. "None of those people know what it's like to be there holding that weapon. After (another Marine) and I went up to that dead girl, I was surprised, because honestly, I was indifferent. It kind of disturbed me. Now, sometimes, I think 'Am I a bad person for feeling nothing?'"

At a Pentagon briefing on Tuesday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Chairman of the Joinst Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey said military officers investigate the vetting process for Afghan police and army recruits every time an insider attack occurs.

These attacks have now taken the lives of at least 107 U.S. and coalition troops since 2007.

Panetta and Dempsey said U.S. and coalition troops will continue to use the “Guardian Angel” program to protect themselves. The program dictates that at least one service member remains armed and on guard when troops are in the presence of Afghans.
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

Ya so the guardian angel is the first shot. If there are armed afghans there they should all have their sidearm. I don't know why it changed but when I was there I was required to always have either my M16 or my M9 with me at all times.

Round in the chamber at all times is a new directive theater wide. Every base I have been to (35+) weapons have been allowed to be placed in racks along the wall in the gyms. Hell CENTCOM GO1 does not require personnel to have possession of their weapon when they PT but required at all other times Weapons condition varried from comand to comand. I hope that has changed.

Looks like I will be back over there mid Sept.

Why are our guys unarmed at any time. In Iraq we slept with our weapon, went to the restroom with our weapon and during showers, they were with an armed guy from our fire team

In the past, on most bases where you were not even required to have a magazine in, the threat from small arms was so low it was nonexistent. The threat by large was IDF and a loaded weapon won't do much good there as you are aware. Smaller bases where the troops are actual war fighters weapon conditions were different, then again, there were armed and unarmed afghans unescorted on the camp. Weapons on their person in the past have been more about accountability for the "sensitive item" then as a defensive tool.

I only post from my experience from 5 plus years there and my observations.

You are 100% right. Never should someone be without there weapon if they are charged with one. I never was and was just fine with that. My new contract might be armed though.....ugh, something to keep track of. lol

I saw the other day the guys are supposed to be armed at all times inside the base which is the way it should be.

It would be interested to see why a guy from MEU was scared, you typically see these guys as being fearless. Is it ROE or are things just that bad? From the guys I know that have been over there it sounds like they are being handcuffed by rules to protect the enemy and or people they are training, not our soldiers. I thought since day 1 there never should have been regular troops on the ground, this should have been a special operations war from the get go. Let the Northern Alliance and local tribes fight the Taliban/Al Qaueda, not some 18 year olds controlled by people in Washington. Take the brass away and this war may have ended 10 years ago. We train special operations to thing before they act then take away the power to make decisions...

MEU (Marine Expiditionary Unit) is not MARSOC or FRecon. It is a general designator for a combined unit of various assets from Mechanics to Grunts.

When you look in their eyes a lot of them are soul less and have zero heart. Then you are charged with arming them and teaching to fight. One wrong word and they will hate you forever. They may show it today or kill you tomorrow.

In general I agree with the rest of your post

We should be using a scorched earth policy. War is hell. By us taking half measures and trying to win their hearts and minds, it only ends up lasting longer. What in the fucking hell are we even doing there now?

I consider MEU above basic ground troops but well below JSOC type guys. But this is from a guy who never served and knew a few of each.

As said war is hell and should be thought of life vs death. War is a game of chess and its hard for our guys to play when they can only play defense.

The reason why we started off so well is the people were protected their land. They said it would take us 6 months to a year to take the south and it took less than 2 months. Same thing happened in Vietnam. When we started training a general military with no central goal between everyone we are due for failure. Sad how Sun Tsu's ideas thousands of years ago are still the basics of war.

This is what it was like doing contract work in Saudi, and we are not even fighting a war in that country. I can't imagine the hostility our forces face in a country we have been fighting in for a decade, and then to be unarmed at that. The sad part is that it does not surprise me in the least.
I don't like Republicans, but I really FUCKING hate Democrats.

"Only the dead see the end of war."
                      Sun Tsu

If you met a Marine that bragged about being a hardass and used MEU as experience, he was a punk. LOL I was in the MEU, it is just a temporary departure from the regular life as a permanent duty station.

                      22MEU '97-'98

Fight to win, fight with ferocity and there is a reason the words over and kill are combined to describe something in excess. Overkill! Come home .........but for right now I need a job so a long as we have troops there I am gonna be working if I can.
