  • County to give special parking spots to wounded vets

Agree 100%, the last line explains it best.

Wounded warriors in one North Carolina county are getting VIP parking spaces marked by signs with a dramatic silhouette of a soldier carrying an injured buddy.
“We’re proud of our military service members, and we support the members who have given so much in defense of our freedoms,” Onslow County Manager Jeff Hudson told the Daily News of Jacksonville.
“We’re proud of our military service members, and we support the members who have given so much in defense of our freedoms.”
    - Jeff Hudson, Onslow (N.C.) county manager
Onslow County Manager Jeff Hudson told the newspaper that county officials will install two wounded warrior parking spaces each at the tax office, the health department and the county's multipurpose complex.
“It’s a new program for us, but certainly we’re proud of our service members,” Hudson said. “We want to make sure that when they utilize county services, that it’s as easy as possible for them.”
The county also will get new parking spaces marked specifically for new and expectant mothers.
“I didn’t want to do only new mothers, because in this community we need to pay attention to our heroes that have also given a lot,” Hudson said, adding that the Register of Deeds is only one of the five county locations getting wounded warrior parking spaces.
Hudson said county officials got the idea to implement the new parking spaces after a local Walmart placed the spaces in their parking lot last summer.
The new parking spaces were previously reserved for judges, but were rarely used, according to Becky Pollard, the registrar with Onslow County’s Register of Deeds. Pollard told a Marine journalist for Defense Video & Imagery Distribution System she suggested the idea to Hudson because she sympathized with injured service members who had to walk long distances.

“It’s wonderful to be able to provide our services to the military,” said Pollard. “Because of them, we have the freedoms we have.”

I support this on principle - some people get put on pedestals and are NOT better than a Veteran, much-less a disabled Veteran.

While I agree with the sentiment, wouldn't a wounded veteran also qualify for a handicapped placard and therefore handicapped parking? Seems redundant?

Now that is good to hear. And no, you have to be 70% or higher for a handicapped parking spot whereas a wounded warrior can have any number of things wrong. It's a show of respect more than a legality

I agree 100% with this. I usually park pretty far back at a grocery store anyways, since I like the extra walking, of course this isn't what alot of fat America does. I watch people circle the parking lots many times just to find a spot, people with no issues at all are lazy.

Ahh. Ok. Wasn't sure what the requirement was for a handicap placard. In that case I agree - its a show of respect.

It's a show of respect and maybe the county has a problem like we do down here. All of the "handicap" people parking in the handicap spots.

They are using the Wounded Warrior logo, I wonder if they are allowing it or told them to use it.

I appreciate the sentiment. I'm starting to think our military members are getting shat upon these days and I don't like it.

What irritates me is flags flying half-mast for anything other than military reasons. I have no problem respecting the shooting victims in Aurora and College Station, and I'll even show respect in the wake ofTim Russert and Whitney Houston's deaths. But lowering the flag is done to show respect for members of our government and military, not just any newsworthy death.
When the government pays, the government controls.

                    This all around.

The country needs to start showing a little more REAL respect not just "uh, yeah I supports the troops" because it is the right thing to say.

When I first left for Afg. I did it for the adventure, money (even though it was a pay cut) but most of all I believed in supporting the troops. Nothing like seeing their faces getting a REAL hot meal and hot shower after being on a patrol or long mission. I purposely put myself on camps that were actual combat war fighters not just logistic guys that never chambered a round in defense of their brothers/sisters.

I think a Wounded Warrior parking is a perfect idea. I can't wait to see the youtube video of the fat fuck piece of trash that takes the spot without having EARNED it.

                    Oh and
Fuck you. We're going to Costco.

I'd chime in on one of my views on this but it'd be kind of self serving

Man our grandparents had to just come home and get to work.

I think its cool what they are doing. Our generation cares more about vets than any other imho.

Way better than Vietnam era, but still not the respect they deserve.

                            My 2 cents.

Seems like it's half mast daily.
