      ^^ this..

Its just like a pro basket ball or foot ball player. They basically were performing a "job" just like any other professional. They should be taxed. But the metal, really c'mon, its just a trophy to hang on their wall.. That is bs, but I think they should not be able to sell the metal for money later on.

They should tax the Nobel Peace Prize.

I can just see it. "Congratulations, the nation owes you a debt of gratitude. Speaking of debt, please step over here and see the head of the IRS."

And no, no military medals are taxed. Well, aside from what they take out of the paychecks.
"It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

If a person makes $25k a year they pay no where near $9k in taxes. Shit out a couple of kids, claim EIC and child tax credit and enjoy the $36k medal!

If you agree with taxing the winnings, then you should also agree with taxing the monetary value of the metal in the medal. It's no different.
We may just disagree, but it's just the way I feel for Olympic medals that are earned.

I understand your logic and I understood it yesterday when I made the post. This is not why, but one is income the other is a trophy.

Trust me, I've been taxed (no sure it used to be called "tax" though...anyway) plenty of times on various items I bought from an overseas country and so forth. I get it.

I'm not going to get all spun up about it though either. They worked hard for the medals, but they also have a lot of financial...luxuries that a lot of kids don't have so I think they can make the payment. Just seems petty to tax an olympic medal.

This. If they're getting paid for winning medals, then they should be taxed just as you or I are for work or even winning a raffle/lottery. Taxing the medals is just stupid. What's next? Taxing 4 year olds for participation trophies in t-ball?

I look at it as a similar situation when you decorate a soldier. Not the same, but kind of in the same category. You are being awarded for excellence in serving and representing your country. And for that you are asked to pay a tax? Bullshit. It shouldn't be considered a gift or income. Do people sell these medals? No. They get framed and hung, then passed down for generations.

im honestly not that surprised at all
I received a letter from the IRS informing me of a new 'bio tax' on my ejaculate. Apparently claiming I'm been over masturbating on the internet recently.
Fuck if i know how they found this out, but when i went over there to drop off a load I was sure to get a delivery receipt. You can't trust those shady bastards with anything.
