    indentured servants worked off the cost of passage for a set time period.

      This. They were usually treated fairly well and worked a parcel of land for x years and then were on their merry way.

        many times they stayed working where they were and were paid for thier labor, since it was already established.

          Am I the only one that sees the irony? He tried skipping out on a tab and BECOMING a slave was his punishment!

              So it's like being a slave, but with a light at the end of the tunnel. :-)

                    So it is like going to work everyday and getting paid except I don't see any fucking lights in my tunnel.

                        It really wasn't. It was hard work on land that was provided for you with tools that were provided for you for a period of time you were paid for. And you had the option of staying on, keep making money, keep living in the house and farming the land and paying rent.

                          wow, all that from:

                          vi) reducing the dropout rate of African American students and helping African American students graduate from high school prepared for college and a career, in part by promoting a positive school climate that does not rely on methods that result in disparate use of disciplinary tools, and by supporting successful and innovative dropout prevention and recovery strategies that better engage African American youths in their learning, help them catch up academically, and provide those who have left the educational system with pathways to reentry;

                            You know what happens when people, even students, have no repercussions from negative behavior? Anarchy.
