I didn't read it as severity at all, I understood the article to say that percentage-wise, blacks are not to be punished any more often than other races, regardles of their behavior.

As much as your version sucks, I sure hope that you're right, and I am wrong.

The timing of this ludacris bill makes perfect sense, if this was so important to him, why wasn't this legislation proposed at the beginning of his term, rather than close to election time?

It's because he damn well knows that the tanking economy doesn't affect those on food stamps, you can't earn less or get fired from gubment cheese. Though there may be a piece of him that believes this is a good idea, which is proof enough that he isn't salient enough to be president, I gurantee the primary motivation here is to secure the votes of the poor minorities, which isn't a small number.

It's free to get registered and vote, and I guarantee that the last election garnered a whole bunch of first-time voters that are well over 18.

Though we possible fucked for another four years, thank God for term limits.

I don't belive it they are trying to say that a principle or a superintendent who I would hope is there for the kids best intrest is singling out black kids and punishing them harsher just because they are black. They even admitted that they do not have an instance where a white kid and black kid did the same thing and were given different punishments.

My version sucks because it's a watered-down version of what you said. It's no longer a case of "punishment fitting the crime", it's now on almost a barter system where you trade in the wrong deed in exchange for another person's punishment.

Little Billy is the only white kid to go to the principal, he went for cutting Science class and got a day of In School Suspension.

Little Leroy is the only black kid to go to the principal, he went for hitting another kid in the head with chair after an argument and also only gets 1 day of In School Suspension.

Here is the problem I have... I went to ISS a few times during school, almost always for stupid piddly stuff that amounts to nothing. However, looking back I see that the purpose was to help curb behavior that would be out of place once you enter the working world. It lends some gravity and severeity to your wrongs: it teaches you that society doesn't accept fuck-ups when you're trying to 'grow up' and be a professional. This setup is going to basically abolish our last efforts to dicipline these brats... the real troublemakers aren't getting their ass beat at home, and so no one will be left to do it.

Personally, I disagree with this whole idea simply because the reality check is going to be so much harder once they get stuck into the general working population and can't keep a job or function in groups simply because "oh shit, you mean I can GO TO JAIL for selling this stuff?!? I only got a week's detention in 11th grade!"

When the democratic spin doctors are finished Obama will have been Einstein's God-child, Churchill's 3rd removed cousin and a staunch supporter for gay marriage since him and Elton John 'had that thing' back during college.

The fucked up thing is that the only reality check that alot of these unpunished shitheads will get, is being shot/murdered, or "catching a case." They won't be anywhere near the general working population, they will be working the streets.

                              Short version:

His great (x11) grandfather came over here as an indentured servant and broke his contract and tried to run. As punishment he became a slave for life. Sounds fitting.

The folks at Ancestry.com have an interesting new take on President Obama's family tree.

The nation's first African-American president may be descended from America's first documented slave.

After years of research, Ancestry.com has determined that Obama is the 11th great-grandson of John Punch, the first documented slave in American history.

"Two of the most historically significant African Americans in the history of our country are amazingly directly related," said Ancestry.com genealogist Joseph Shumway.

Ancestry.com also points out that "remarkably, the connection was made through President Obama's Caucasian mother's side of the family."

John Punch, an indentured servant in Colonial Virginia, was punished for trying to escape in 1640 by being declared a slave for life -- the first documented case of slavery.

                              More from Ancestry.com:

President Obama is traditionally viewed as an African-American because of his father's heritage in Kenya. However, while researching his Caucasian mother, Stanley Ann Dunham's lineage, Ancestry.com genealogists found her to have African heritage as well, which piqued the researchers' interest and inspired further digging into Obama's African-American roots.

In tracing the family back from Obama's mother, Ancestry.com used DNA analysis to learn that her ancestors, known as white landowners in Colonial Virginia, actually descended from an African man. Existing records suggest that this man, John Punch, had children with a white woman who then passed her free status on to their offspring. Punch's descendants went on to be free, successful land owners in a Virginia entrenched in slavery.

An expert in Southern research and past president of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, Elizabeth Shown Mills, performed a third-party review of the research and documentation to verify the findings.

"In reviewing Ancestry.com's conclusions, I weighed not only the actual findings but also Virginia's laws and social attitudes when John Punch was living," said Mills. "A careful consideration of the evidence convinces me that the Y-DNA evidence of African origin is indisputable, and the surviving paper trail points solely to John Punch as the logical candidate.

Genealogical research on individuals who lived hundreds of years ago can never definitively prove that one man fathered another, but this research meets the highest standards and can be offered with confidence."

Ancestry.com has determined that President Obama is the 11th great-grandson of John Punch, the first documented slave in American history.

what would be the practical different between an indentured servant and a slave?
