I was thinkingof saving up 4-500k by working until i am 45 and then going down, renting a place on the beach, buying a boat, and living the good life by just hangin out and taking the very occasional tourist on fishing/sightseeing tours. Only 20 yrs and 4 months to go! :'(

You would be an emigrant from the US, and I doubt you'd have to give your citizenship up to do it. Hold tight, let me google.

Edit: If your wife is a kiwi, you should be good to go.

He wouldnt have to. With his disability being tax free, there isnt any reason to renounce anyway. NZ, like most other cointries, is pretty friendly towards who have assets or a steady income that doesnt take away from the citizens. Retirement visas are not all that difficult to come by.

Id say do it frost. You only live once.

Kind of like Mexico (where my mom lives). Really nice until shit goes bad. Then it goes REALLY bad.
Again, it's a perception deal and a group of people have sold a bill of goods to the American public that don't represent the truth.

Just remember one thing; I seem to remember gun laws in NZ being stricter than the US but not as bad as the UK or Japan. If I recall, Frost, you do not own any guns so it would not be a deal breaker for you, but just keep that in mind as any government who restricts arms ownership too severely usually restricts other aspects of your life as well. Just something to think about.

I'd have to live there for a year before I was a citizen and things are outrageously expensive but it's a fallback position

Yeah, their gun laws are nuts. You can't have them in the home, they have to be registered and left at a gun range.

Odd; I thought I read you could have them at home if you had a proper safe. I must have been reading about another country, I guess. Not a place I would want to live, then, but to each their own I suppose.

That's why I haven't moved. Texas is home and I love the US, but in the course of human events...

I understand completely; I too have a fallback in mind just in case. Every avenue must be covered; especially when you have a child to look after.

That's the thing. Anyone who doesn't plan for worse case scenarios are fools

Is that estimation total cost of living or just housing cost? just curious.

My mom has lived south of Guadalajara for over 10 years now. It's not like it used to be. The only thing really cheap about Mexico is the property taxes. She has a really nice 2800 sq. ft. place, and the taxes are less than $150 a year. Health care is a joke, and if you don't have cash, they will let you die in the street. There's no insurance to speak of, and no loans for houses. You pay cash. If you want to live in a hut with dirt floors, eat nothing but beans and tortilla's, and drink bad water, you can live there cheap.

You read a lot about people wnating to move on this site . To some other country . Id like to have a nice spot on some beautiful clear water beach . I know they are available in other places besides the standard tourist traps . But where ? What country has places like that, that you dont worry about being murdered in you sleep for the stuff in the house ?
