Gotta tell you this so I can make my point: I had three uncles come back from WW2. All had varying degrees of service-connected disabilities that plagued them for the rest of their lives. The worst joined the USMC when he was 14, was in a medium tank outfit. His unit made almost every one of the island campaigns in the South Pacific - when the infantry units got relieved and sent for R & R, his unit stayed and mopped up. Then they moved to the next island.
His bones and joints were still not mature when he joined. On the islands, they ran out of C and K rations, so they ate snakes, rats, birds, whatever they could scrounge. He didn't get the nutrition he needed. He had bone and joint problems for the rest of his life.
All three uncles REFUSED to accept anything from the VA because they thought it was welfare and they would rather die than accept a handout. I remember being damned impressed as a teenager that they were too proud to accept help from Uncle Sugar. In my family, accepting welfare was an admission that you were a failure. Most people I grew up with had similar feelings.
What the hell has happened to our society?
Prof. Alexander Frazer Tytler said "...a democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse out of the public treasury".
I guess that's where we are now.Last edited by JP135; 06-23-2012, 09:17 PM.
