Man visited by armed EPA agents not satisfied with answers, wants agency changes

The North Carolina man visited by armed EPA agents after sending an email to a controversial agency official says he's not satisfied with the explanations about what he considers an excessive response and that he wants changes to agency policies and procedures.

    "This isn't over," Keller said.

He told Fox News.com that Environmental Protection Agency officials have said the agency followed procedures and that the agents acted appropriately during their visit last month. However, Keller is still invited to come to EPA headquarters to discuss the situation.

Keller said he's not willing to come to Washington without knowing what will be discussed.

The incident unfolded after Keller sent an email April 27 to the EPA to try to reach Al Armendariz -- a regional administrator who was under fire for a YouTube video post days earlier in which he said his enforcement strategy was to "crucify" executives from big oil and gas companies.

The letter to an EPA external affairs director read "Do you have Mr. Armendariz's contact information so we can say hello? - Regards- Larry Keller."

Keller said he was just asking as a taxpayer and denies being part of the Tea Party, though he acknowledges supporting the movement's calls to defund the agency in part because it has outreached its intended mission.

"We are a customer of them," he said.

Armendariz, whose region included oil-rich Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, resigned April 29 for the comments, made in 2010.

The agents visited Keller's home in Ashville, N.C. on May 2 to ask him about the email, which after some misunderstanding Keller acknowledged sending. He said after a brief, tense discussion about whether the missive might seem suspicious, the agents, who were escorted by the local police, left despite Keller ask them to stay to his wife could witness their visit.

"The charter of the EPA is to protect the environment and public, not to act as a quasi federal police department," Keller said Saturday.

Keller appears to have some support in Washington. GOP Sen. Richard Burr's office has agreed to look into the matter.

The North Carolina senator could not be reached this weekend, but a staffer told the Carolina Journal.com that Burr's office has initiated an inquiry with the EPA and that the senator "intends to pursue this matter vigorously."

A regional EPA official told Keller the agency was following up on his email, considering its timing and the number of threats against Armendariz.

"I want a change of policy and procedure," Keller said. "They've got big problems."

Aside from the obvious "WTF?!?" regarding armed EPA "agents", I'll just say that I hope they were armed with lead-free bullets.
"It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

My understanding is any US "Agency" is considered a law enforcement agency. IRS, DOE, ect all have armed "enforcers" so to speak.

Think about how tiny Washington DC is then look at how many different law enforcement agencies they have.

Armed agents with little authority could be the reason where citizens begin to really fight back.

Senator opens inquiry into EPA’s armed visit to NC man’s home

                  Published: 2:08 PM 06/11/2012

An Asheville, N.C. man has enlisted the aid of North Carolina Republican Sen. Richard Burr to investigate a visit he received from two armed Environmental Protection Agency officials and a local police officer.

Burr has been in touch with the man and started an inquiry into the incident with EPA.

According to the Ashville Citizen-Times, Larry Keller claims the EPA targeted him after he sent an email on April 27 to former EPA Region 6 Administrator Al Armendariz, who resigned on April 30 over comments he made comparing the administration’s enforcement policy to Roman crucifixions. (RELATED: Complete coverage of the Al Armendariz scandal)

The letter to an EPA external affairs director read simply, “Do you have Mr. Armendariz’s contact information so we can say hello? – Regards- Larry Keller.”

“I wanted to know why someone in his position would say what he did. I wanted to question his reasoning and principles. It’s all about freedom of speech,” Keller told The Carolina Journal.

The agents visited Keller on May 2, two days after Armendariz resigned.

Keller is not convinced the matter is over, and he wants a full explanation. But the Journal reported that Patrick Sullivan, the EPA’s assistant inspector general, does not believe there was “any unprofessional behavior” by Office of Inspector General personnel, and that Keller “answered the questions and the suspicious nature of the email was resolved.”

Fox News Channel reported that the EPA has invited Keller to come to Washington. The Asheville man, however, is unwilling until he has a full understanding of what the EPA wants to discuss.

“The charter of the EPA is to protect the environment and public, not to act as a quasi federal police department,” Keller told Fox News on Saturday.

In late April on the Senate floor, Oklahoma Republican Sen. James Inhofe highlighted video of Armendariz, then the Region 6 Administrator, explaining EPA’s heavy-handed approach to enforcement. That video brought about Armendariz’s resignation just days later.

“I was in a meeting once and I gave an analogy to my staff about my philosophy of enforcement, and I think it was probably a little crude and maybe not appropriate for the meeting but I’ll go ahead and tell you what I said,” Armendariz said in the video footage.

“It was kind of like how the Romans used to conquer little villages in the Mediterranean. They’d go into a little Turkish town somewhere, they’d find the first five guys they saw and they’d crucify them. And then you know that town was really easy to manage for the next few years.”

The EPA needs to disappear. It is a fabulous example of what happens when you give someone a little power and a vague mission statement.

Yep. Which is one of the reasons if I had a time machine, Nixon would disappear.

Point is, an EO could disband it too.

IF a POTUS had the balls. Would that nullify all "laws" enacted by the EPA?
