The House Armed Services Committee recently forwarded the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2013 (HR4310) to the full House for a vote. The bill omitted many of the TRICARE Fee increases proposed by the White House. The Office of Management and Budget issued a response in which they stated that senior advisors would recommend that President would veto the bill if it passed Congress.

Yep no surprise there. They are going to change the retirement plan next. When it comes to cutting defense or social programs defense gets it in the ass. With that they are going after the people and programs not their shiny overpriced toys. Never fails in a time of drawdown they do that and wonder what happened after most of the mid level knowledge base is gone. It is the 4-9 year guys that make most the money. They have the training and experience to make shit happen. They are also the ones who are smart and get out when they see they are going to get fucked. I have seen a ton of great guys get out in the last few years now that they are putting stop gates in place for certain rank by a certain point. Or if your job is overmanned they show you the door no matter how good you are. The good/smart ones see it and are leaving in droves. I would never tell someone thinking about going in the military to join unless it was their last resort.

Because in order to get Tricare for life, you must be retired. Which means you either did your 30 or were injured and medically retired. Either way, we paid for it.

I am ok with it going up a bit things cost more over time. But after 20 years people getting out have to start over. (see my above post about what seems important)

Why go in the military for 20 years and have to wait till 62 for your retirement? (plan on the table) It used to be you went in you did your time and the carrot was the retirement at the end. Why in the world would you go in now when if you don't hit certain marks they set you are on the street. No chance to finish a supposed contract. That only matters if they want you to stay. If not they target certain entry years and jobs to cut. Of those they let just enough retrain to other fields to make it look good... Other then that sorry about your luck...

What happened to serving because you felt it was your duty as someone who had enjoyed the benefits the Constitution guarantees? I served in the Air Force but you didn't see me staying in for 20 years, stomping my feet, and yelling "give me, give me, give me!" at the end. I have done contracting work overseas and I have seen what happens when you turn the military into a welfare tool; there will not be good results. Now I am am all for taking care of those wounded or injured in the line of duty, even paying 100% of their care for those injuries sustained while in service. However, hearing all this bitching and whining because you are retired and your co-pay went up is getting old. Everyone else's copays just went up for private insurance and we figure out how to deal with it and move on. Thanks for your service and everything, but at the same time quit being a little bitch just because you want free stuff. If you want free stuff from your employer go find a union job at GM or the railroad.

Edit: And if it matters for the sake of the argument I served 6 years, honorable discharge, and no injuries / disabilities, etc.

We forgo a lot of extra pay and civilian stuff to put in our time. And when you get injured or put in your time to retire, you are promised health care. Now they want to jump the prices.

I think the big issue is we pay 100% for illegals and welfare queens but expect our disabled veterans and those who have put in service for decades to pay more and more

If we are arguing at all Sir we are only about 90 degrees out. You are dead on about using the military as a welfare tool. My halfass bitch was cutting it yet keeping the social entitlement shit going with no cuts as well.

When I was in New Orleans there was a lady on TV bitching about cuts while she gets 800 a month for every kid she pops out. In the background of here apartment there was a 52 inch tv full sound and lots of trinkets. We all have to endure cuts and as a taxpayer I agree.

My bitch with the military is they need to hold their end up about as well. It is not about the pay or benefits. It is about for whatever reason one joined they can get bounced out for very little. When money gets tight they look to the people first and not practice. Every year most commands have money left over and the mentality is spend it or loose it next year. Year after year I see stupid bullshit being bought so the budget is spent close but not quite over. Commanding officers should have a bullet for what they used the money for no shit stuff and how much they saved. Not buying 20k worth of new office furniture to replace the 3 year old stuff. The mentality forever has been to spend it or loose it next year.

Back to your opening statement that is the reason I joined. It is just galling sometimes to see the troops who have earned it get put on the chopping block in front of bloated entitlement programs (and yes the military has a bunch too) but when the military does not honor contracts signed in good faith by people who enlist there needs to be a WTF asked...

Don't forget while you put in the time healthcare is free there is a lot to be said about that. I am not adverse to the increase at all. If you really look at it TRICARE for life is a hell of a lot better/cheaper then civilians get even with the cost increase. I am ok with the increase honestly. My bitch is it is a wedge in the door. Like I said earlier revamping retirement to 62 and having to try and start over at 40ish would suck having to start over. Imagine doing twenty years and having to find a job to cover house and kids with no backup. Sure when you are 52 or 62 whenever they decide it is going to be will be good.

My point with saying do not do it is this....

Go to college then decide if you want to go in.

If college is not affordable then use the military as a tool to get there via the GI Bill.

If the military suits you stay in and rock out and have fun!!!

Just always remember the old saying.... "needs of the military"

That means they can cut short your contract to suit their needs. They can send you where they want when they want to do what they want.

yet thats exactly whats happening....we have had at least 4 new check ins (boot camps) over the age of 30 in the last few months.
i know if im seeing it at my command, others are seeing it at theirs at well.
