We install a lot of auto-download stuff, so as a patrol unit pulls into the station his car pings the server and starts uploading all the video data. every other recording system i have seen requires a Lt. or higher with the key to access it.

All that says is it's not the patrolman who deletes it. I can pull story after story of incidents where 'tapes got lost' or the 'camera malfunctioned' or 'the data was overwritten.'

Yeah, there will/can always be technical malfunctions - but there are measures that are being implemented to stop the folks in the streets from being at blame.

Which is why in a lot of cities you're starting to see more and more wireless networks intended for police/fire. In some areas it just uploads while they patrol, not even just at the station.

edit: My post made it seem like that's the only reason for the wireless network, it's just one.

If you can remove the police completely from access to their videos unless they need them, you may get somewhere. Too much temptation to have a malfunction if the city is being sued for a cop roughing up someone

Well, as much trash as we all talk on Dallas Pd, I do like the direction they have been going involving this. No beating videos are getting lost and have been given to the media, along with 2 settlements in the past could of days.
