MedinaDebra Medina -- a Republican who unsuccessfully challenged Rick Perry and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for the Republican party's gubernatorial nomination in 2010 -- on Thursday asked state lawmakers to end property tax in the Lone Star State.
Medina, who heads the non-partisan, liberty-seeking Wharton-based We Texans organization, gave the House Ways and Means Committee paperwork signed by more than 6,000 Texans who agree.
"The property tax is broken, it is not fixable and we'd do well to be rid of it entirely," Medina said. "If we're to have a prayer of achieving that prosperous economy we boast we have, we must get rid of it.
"History has documented that ownership of property is the bedrock of every prosperous society," she said. "Man will not work for what he cannot keep. The property tax must be eliminated."
