  • Ending Property Taxes

When you pay off your home, no one should be able to take it from you. Just saying, I voted for her when she was up for vote

MedinaDebra Medina -- a Republican who unsuccessfully challenged Rick Perry and U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison for the Republican party's gubernatorial nomination in 2010 -- on Thursday asked state lawmakers to end property tax in the Lone Star State.

Medina, who heads the non-partisan, liberty-seeking Wharton-based We Texans organization, gave the House Ways and Means Committee paperwork signed by more than 6,000 Texans who agree.

"The property tax is broken, it is not fixable and we'd do well to be rid of it entirely," Medina said. "If we're to have a prayer of achieving that prosperous economy we boast we have, we must get rid of it.

"History has documented that ownership of property is the bedrock of every prosperous society," she said. "Man will not work for what he cannot keep. The property tax must be eliminated."

Yeah, I can see that passing. Huge property taxes is how Texas generates a huge portion of the revenue and can scream that they don't have any income tax, unless you own a home.

I agree with her. While my home is tax exempt, when I die, I do not want my home split up to pay taxes to the State. When you buy your house, that land should be sovereign with no agency able to take it

I agree with you, I'm just saying that she is pissing in the wind.

I'd pay more in property taxes now, IF I knew there was an end to it.

So, increase sales tax or institute state income tax to cover it?

Pick your poison You would have to add them back somewhere, they aren't letting all that money slip away.

I can't figure out which one would be better, but I think I would prefer increased sales tax.

I'd be all for it if they'd use the sales tax to make up the difference. I'm completely against any state income tax. That would take a constitutional amendment and fuck a whole bunch of that.

Of course, the first thing that will happen is the liberals will start crying all over the place about how this will result in cuts to education. Just like last year when the state budget issue came up and there were rivers of tears running down every street foretelling the impending doom of cuts to schools. Mainly what happened is some school districts laid off some teachers, a lot of others fired a bunch of administrators, which is exactly what needed to happen.

At the end of the day I couldn't care less if it does mean cuts to the education system. The school system is not an entitlement program, it should be run efficiently. It isn't. There is nothing like some budget cuts to make people find efficiency. I'm also not interested in paying to educate a bunch of illegals in South Texas and that is where a bunch of our money ends up going.

You either have a state income tax or you have high propety taxes. You get one or the other.

I don’t know a whole lot about where the money is spent and what not but I am pretty tired of paying taxes on my property towards the school, then they get help from the state and the gov't then when we have a budget shortfall in some other area, education is the first to get hit...

Where is all of the money going? If I had several sources of income I guarantee I would not be having a budget shortfall...

Fuck property taxes, and fuck state income tax as well. State income tax is one of the few reasons I would likely leave this state in a hurry. I would welcome increased sales tax to make up the difference; they would get more money as more would be paying in ( non property owners and low income families ) so people like me with decent jobs that own a house aren't getting fucked like a date after prom. Plus with a sales tax I can decide to buy less if I wanted to.
I don't like Republicans, but I really FUCKING hate Democrats.

In both systems the poor get the benefit.

Does San Fran have any extra area-specific tax that is ridiculous too?
