Urban Training in Miami with Explosions, Simulated Raid and Gunfire – Residents Feared City was Under Attack

First Los Angeles, then Chicago, now Miami Florida seems to be the newest location for the Department of Defense’s latest round of Urban Warfare Training.
military in urban environment A number of Miami area residents woke late last night to the sounds of Black Hawk Helicopters, Gun Fire and even Explosions. Many residents were so concerned that 9-11 was flooded with calls from people who feared the city was under some sort of attack. In fact, a number of the calls wanted to know why armed choppers were flying and firing shots over their homes.
So what happened in Miami?
It seems Miami Florida was just another city in a long string of Department of Defense urban training drills. The Department of Defense was conducting an urban assault simulation that included simulated explosions, gunfire and military personnel repelling from helicopters onto the Grand Bay Hotel. Local residents say that the military personal repelled onto the roof and then entered the building between 1 and 3 a.m last night.
Residents were in shock and many were in fear that the hotel was under attack.
One guest at the hotel told the Miami Herald:
“It was quite a shocking experience,” said Jane Muir, who was awakened around 1:45 a.m. by the sound of military choppers that later dropped rappelling soldiers onto the Grand Bay’s rooftop. “It was kind of that bizarre feeling that you were surrounded by wind.”
From her third-floor balcony, Muir then watched the soldiers fire off flares and smoke bombs before searching floor by floor through the darkened hotel, their paths marked by flashlights and the pop-pop-pop of gunshots. “The show of force was so overwhelming,” she said.
A U.S. Army spokesman,Maj. Michael Burns said in a statement:
The maneuvers were part of a “realistic urban training” exercise for about 100 military personnel, and organized by the U.S. Special Operations Command. The exercise also included three military helicopters, and the use of simulated explosions and gunfire to mimic real-life military scenarios.
