  • Trayvon Martin's mom files trademark papers

It looks like that poor, grieving mother is already trying to make bank off her sons death.
SANFORD, Fla. – The mother of slain Florida teenager Trayvon Martin has filed papers seeking to trademark two slogans based on his name.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filings by Sybrina Fulton are for the sayings "I Am Trayvon" and "Justice For Trayvon." The applications were filed last week.

The applications say the trademarks could be used for such things as DVDs and CDs. Attorneys who filed the papers did not immediately respond Monday to emails seeking comment.

Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman has claimed he shot the 17-year-old Martin in self-defense. Martin's family claims racial profiling was behind the killing, which has become a national racial flashpoint. Martin was black. Zimmerman's father is white and mother Hispanic.

I saw that on drudge. I understand trademarks are to protect the name or phrase from being used, but do you really think she's out to make cash? I guess so, that was my first idea too, but damn, maybe there is another reason?

It is usually done to force people to pay royalties to the person that owns the trademark when the name or phrase is used, or to secure the name or phrase as a title to a movie, etc.

I understand that that is one reason, but is there really any other reason to trademark, or is it 100% a financial move?

To control the usage of what ever is trademarked.
