And yet you two schmucks can't debate that I'm wrong. Burn a bible, you're fine. Burn a Koran and you lose rank and get an angry letter from Obama.

It's already been described to you. The original context clearly applied to all religions, even though you and your article slanted it to Christians alone. It's the all popular knee jerk race card you see today, except played for religion.

As far as your burning Bibles vs. burning Korans debacle: the reason you'd have an issue with burning the Koran is two fold: 1) it needed a ban because Soldiers were actively wanting to insult Islam (not Christianity) 2) burning the Koran directly impacts our mission negatively. The Bibles burnt were not in a hostile or offensive way.

I realize it's hard as a lower enlisted Soldier, but try to look at the big picture in terms of mission. Gen. Patreaus coined the term "winning the hearts and minds" as the focus toward actually winning these wars and he's absolutely right. The decisive terrain is the human terrain and if we want to get out of here in anytime in the near future, while still abiding by current Law of War, then we need to avoid turning any more people into terrorists.

You need to realize that when people give up debating with you, without conceeding their point, it's not because they can't. It's because they've gotten frustrated with your hardheadedness.

Yet the dipshit I quoted above can't seem to figure out WHY they want the Koran showed a little respect. You're trying to get the locals to work with you, why would you want to piss them off by burning their book. Not to mention, if you're ordered not to damage a Koran, reasoning be damned, and you do it anyway, you violated a direct order, something you'll get busted for regardless of what it was that you did. For someone that was in the military, and touts their experience over others, it's surprising that you're unable to understand why you'd get in trouble for damaging something they told you not to. The military isn't a democracy, it's a dictatorship. You do what you're told, when you're told, no ifs ands or buts, or you get in trouble.

          Dolt.

why cant they just say fuck it and use the don't ask don't tell policy here and let them use whatever they want. The thing that I keep getting hung up on is denying last rights. How can they deny you that? That's pretty fucked up.

              The policy has been rescinded...

Every time someone debates with you, you say,"Nu-uh!" and repeat what you previously said, ignoring the other person. Why waste my time? I'm not going to change your mind, because you take everything to it's absolute extreme rather than thinking about it.

Just to clarify for others and/or myself. The military traditionally has cared a whole lot about religion. There are multiple chapels on bases, Sunday services and representation from numerous types of religions.

Just wanted to throw that out there, since I THINK it's been mentioned that the military does not give a darn about your religion (if you have one) and that traditionally has not been the case. Hell, they put it on your dog tags.

In fact, I recall deploying - even to stateside areas and being given a bible. I think I was given one in basic training. Not a huge one, but one of those tiny pocket sized ones.

Ya'll have fun carrying on now. FF may make bad arguments, but he has points that I agree with. In the end, policies like this should have never been implemented to begin with.

Yeah, I agree, but that isn't (all of) his argument. His argument is that the policy was singling out Christians when it really applies to all religions.

I'm not going to argue that it singled out Christians directly.

Aw hell, I'm not going to argue anything. Policies are one thing, the way they are implemented and enforced tend to be unfair and that's reality.

Unless you see it for yourself you tend to not believe it. Hell, even seeing it done in the military can be surreal.

It's just not really worth the time to try and in-directly support SOME of FF's points or try to make my own on these matters. It comes off wrong and it's difficult to do in a way everyone "gets it" and will boil down to name calling and someone being a racist.

                      Take care,

As a pastafarian, I'm deeply upset by this. Why do they have to single out pastafarians only. Next thing you know they're going to start a war on our pagan Pastamas tradition.

Exactly. The military cares very much about religion and it is impossible to burn Bibles in an unoffensive way

I was more referencing the fact that only you could have come to such a simple conclusion, and I don't mean that in the best of ways.

Anyways, no, that's not what I'm saying. Someone will always find it offensive. There's no fix to that, you will always have some distorted, bleeding heart somewhere on just about every subject. I'm sure someone could try their hardest to burn one in a respectable fashion (kind of like destroying a flag, respectfully) and someone would cry bloody murder nonetheless. People who, like you, are overly sensitive to the subject.

*Turns out there is a protocol to burn a bible. Burn it and bury the ashes.
