  • Cain tells staff he's reassessing campaign

Herman Cain told senior campaign staff members Tuesday that he's "reassessing" his campaign in the wake of a fresh allegation that he engaged in a 13-year-long extramarital affair.

Steve Grubbs, the candidate's Iowa campaign chairman, confirms to NBC News that Cain said he's taking a step back, much as he did after his finish in the Ames Straw Poll in August, to evaluate the direction of his campaign. The call included Cain's 50 state directors, and the reassessment will occur over the next two days.

This reassessment coincides with a new allegation from Ginger White, an Atlanta woman who says that she and Cain engaged in an affair for well over a decade, one that ended only recently. Cain has denied the affair.

Cain reiterated his claim, made yesterday in reaction to the new allegation, that White was simply a friend who he had sought to help financially, and that nothing inappropriate had happened between the two of them.

The former Godfather's Pizza CEO, who has faced a string of different allegations of sexual harassment, also said that he had no immediate plans to cancel his campaign events; he still intends to deliver a major foreign policy speech tonight in Michigan.

But Cain acknowledged the emotional toll that the claims against him had taken on his family. He said yesterday on CNN that he would stay in the campaign as long as his wife continued to believe he should stay in the race.

In the same interview, though, Cain opened the door to a possible exit from the race.

"It's just the way it is, but I'm not going to allow this sort of thing to cause me to drop out simply because it's tough on me. I don't want it to be tough on my family. And there comes a point that if it's tough on my family, I have to consider that at that particular point in time," he said.

Asked whether he would drop out if the race became too tough, Cain said: "I'll make that decision depending upon the circumstances and how it is impacting my wife and my family. That's my number one concern by all of these accusations."

    SLIDESHOW: Herman Cain

***UPDATE*** Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon tells NBC News: "It's a reassessment of where we stand and the road ahead, similar to other times in the campaign's history. We're looking forward to getting back on message tonight with the Foreign Policy and National Security speech at Hillsdale College in Michigan."

Well, looks like it may be the end of Cains campaign. I think he will drop out by next week. For what its worth, I do believe he had a 13 year affair he is denying. Who comes up with something like that? Even Cain says they have been friends. He probably told her no more of his magic stick and she went running to the media. Also I believe the "update" is just them trying to hang on. I think all of his campaign supporters are going to be running for the hills.

I've tried to keep an open mind, because I like Herman, but it seems to me that about the only thing that Herman likes more than pizza, is pussy. Most men would choose getting laid over a thin-crust pepperoni pizza, but damn...

Yea, I kept him at about my 3rd favorite. At one point he was at the top for me. But his lies are showing through. He should have came out and said he made a mistake with the affair. At this point, everyone knows he is lying. I could care less who he is sleeping with.

Like you, it's the lie that bothers me, not so much the character flaw.

          Lying and cheating reflects character.
          2 Chronicles 7:14
If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

I agree. But I look at lying as alot worse. I understand that all polititians lie. But how can anyone honestly believe anything Cain says when its clear he is lying before he is even in the White House. Sure he could have brushed off the sexual harrassments, but this affair is not going to be so easy.

I don't believe this latest accuser. I mean, look at that bitch. Not even a black man would sleep with that white bitch.

I agree she is ugly. But Cain has showed time and time again that he keeps a brown sack handy. The fact that they have been friends for years and he is talking about folding tells me all I need to know. How can you make up a 13 year affair? If she wanted to be believable should could have just said 1 year.

                    I think Herman is done...

How could he run for office and not know all these skeletons were going to reappear at some point?

                    mardyn.

looks like the GOP is again going to put up yet another unelectable, tired, old, white guy and wonder wtf? when we get four more years of Obama.

I can't believe that he would even try to run knowing that all of these skeletons were in the closet and would come out. I gave him the benefit of the doubt early on but where there's smoke there's fire, and at this point he's ablaze. And he's a liar to boot.

It is hard to say in politics but if he backs out I think it would be a potential sign of guilt.

That is weird though just last night when I was watching him he said he had no intent of ending his campaign unless his wife has an issue. I guess he had a lot of pillow talk last night.

Herman was done after the Libya video. I was done with Herman after listening to him ramble when it came to foreign policy in every debate, with every question answered with "I would listen to the generals on the ground."

Herman Cain has been a plant, whether he knows it or not, from the very start. The media has been having a field day with this group...
