It wouldn't be that much gold at the prices we'd see. You'd also have to take an ever-growing population and its demand for these hard assets too.

i would propose a resource based economy. the current economy is driven by the need for goods. the problem being that everything produced currently has "planned obsolescence," or is planned to break down. products are purposely designed this way to keep us consuming so the current "economy" (which does not economize at all) will keep moving forward, keep the corporations rich, and the lower classes working. this would be fine if all the planets resources were infinite, but they are not.

this explains it pretty well, but for it to happen the people would have to want to change it. the only way that will ever happen is if the global economy crashes, and people start looking for a logical solution that isn't based on being rich, but rather prolonging the life of the human species on this planet.

I love textbook idealism. Yes, if we could get every person to ignore their own self interest that would work. Best of luck getting that to happen. The closest thing we have to that system in our history are the communist societies. They don't work at all.

i agree 100%. that is why i would think the current economy would have to fail on a massive scale, be it from war, natural disaster, or an economy collapse. it won't happen over night, but neither did they way we currently do things. it takes a series of baby steps.
