Seems the markings only show up when the craft is heated by the auxiliary power systems are powered up. If they can get close enough to do this, imagine what they can do to destroy a plane

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Federal agencies were working with Southwest Airlines on Thursday to determine who has been vandalizing their aircraft with mysterious markings.

KNX 1070 investigative reporter Charles Feldman has learned that since February, several Southwest jets have been vandalized with mysterious writings that show up on the underbelly of their 737 passenger aircraft.

The writings — which some have interpreted as being either Arabic or Arabic-type symbols — appeared to have been done with a chemical process that reveals the text once an auxiliary power unit is turned on and heats up the outside skin of the aircraft, according to Feldman.

While it remains unclear how many aircraft are involved, the trend has reportedly increased in recent weeks.

Southwest Airlines has ordered its employees not to discuss the matter with the media, Feldman said.

In a statement to KNX 1070, Southwest said it is working with authorities to find those responsible for what the company called “vandalism”, but it’s not clear how many people are involved.

Both the Transportation Security Administration and Federal Bureau of Investigations is working with Southwest, but the airline denied this is a safety issue and would not provide any more details.

        Interesting.

2 weeks ago I had an 8am Southwest flight from DAL to HOU. It got cancelled that morning (no weather). Their reason: "Well it just says that plane was taken out of service. Who knows..."

        Hmmmm

TSA is keeping us safe..Right. They don't check the checked luggage, the planes are marked with arabic numbers that light up after the plane warms up, but they keep us safe

They don't check checked luggage? Really? I have had mine checked the majority of the time I have travelled. You must not travel much.

I was about to ask that. A couple dozen TSA agents were fired because they didn't check the checked luggage.

My luggage? They take a pair of bolt cutters and cut the TSA lock off and go through my stuff.

                  LOL at the article comments:

Janet (two scoops) Neopolitan is on the case so nothing to worry about here. Eric Holder is going to sell some guns to illegals and have them guard the plane.

The Transportation Security Administration finalized firing close to 30 of its employees, and suspending an additional 15, at a Hawaiian airport for improperly screening checked baggage, the agency announced Monday.

"The Transportation Security Administration has completed the adjudication process of almost all 48 employees impacted by the June announcement at Honolulu International Airport," the agency said in a statement that was provided to The Hill. "Of those, three resigned or retired, 28 employees have been removed and 15 suspended. The affected employees have the right to appeal the decision."

The workers have gone through what TSA called this summer an "extensive investigation" since the beginning of the year for reportedly allowing baggage to pass through security that had not been properly screened for explosive devices.

The agency first said it was proposing the firings this summer.

Republicans on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, who have pushed to privatize airport security, called in June for the incident involving the Hawaii TSA workers to be investigated.

"The recent proposed firings of a significant number of TSA employees, including members of the TSA's own leadership team, at Honolulu International Airport (HNL), highlight the conflict that exists when TSA acts as both the operator and the regulator of the aviation screening programs," Transportation Committee Chairman John Mica (R-Fla.) and Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) wrote in a June 21 letter to acting Department of Homeland Security Inspector General Charles Edwards.

"It is imperative the federal agency responsible for maintaining aviation security operates in an effective and efficient manner," the lawmakers said.

I can tell you with 100% absolute certainty that they DO check every piece of luggage that gets on a plane..

How else are they gonna figure out if your shit is worth stealing.

No I haven't. But I have had TSA cards placed in my luggage and all my belongings within my suitcase rearranged. I am definitely pissed off when I get my suitcase and everything is screw up. I doubt there is a luggage fairy doing it... lol
