  • Tax dollars at work...

(AP) WASHINGTON - Muffins: $16 apiece. Coffee: more than a dollar an ounce. Snacks: $32 per person.
A report issued Tuesday by the Justice Department's inspector general found excessive spending on food and beverages in an audit of 10 department conferences.

Justice spent about $490,000 on food and beverages at the conferences — more than 10 percent of the $4.4 million total cost of the events.

In response, the Justice Department concurred with the IG's recommendations to more closely monitor costs.

The department hosted or participated in 1,832 conferences in 2008 and 2009, costing $121 million.

The IG's report said that at a Washington, D.C., legal conference, the department spent $4,200 on 250 muffins — or more than $16 apiece.

At another conference, the department's Office on Violence Against Women spent $65 per person at a lunch for 65 people. Coffee cost more than $1 an ounce. A snack break at the same conference cost $32 per person for Cracker Jack, popcorn and candy bars.

The report says that with service charges, taxes and indirect costs, many of the meals and refreshments at the conferences the IG examined appeared to be extravagant and wasteful and exceeded department cost limits.

That seems pretty petty. Why not fix the real fuck ups and not what kind of coffee or muffin someone is eating.

Half of America has spending problems. 400k in 10Trillion or whatever the hell amount is nothing. I am not dismissing it all together I am just saying there are bigger problems than a lunch bill..

It is indicative of a bigger problem. If they can't cater a lunch without paying triple what any private company would, I don't have faith in them to do anything correctly when it comes to more complicated matters. This kind of spending is rampant in Washington because in the view of government workers, the money just magically falls from the skies. We all know it comes out of our pockets and this is one big reason why I don't favor giving them a single red cent more in revenue.

It should be illegal to charge $16 for a muffin.

About the same as a $2 muffin, I'd imagine?

Exactly, they operate in an entirely different world. We all know the muffin industry subsides have to be maintained!

I have a banana nut muffin and a V8 from the sandwich shop this morning, $2.89 lol

I guess you missed the part where it said conferences in 2008 and 2009. While the Obama administration can be blamed for a lot of things, that's not one of them.

Ever look at what hotels charge for conferences? Big businesses do this all the time. What happens is that you have basically two options for meetings. You can either pay a flat, per person cost for breaks, meals, cocktails, etc. or pay a consumption fee based on what is actually taken. If you go the consumption route, it's usually more. What happens is a muffin that is say $3 normally just became $8 to 10. Then, they'll tack on a 22.5% service charge and then the tax on top of that. It doesn't take long to get to $16 for a pastry like that. It sucks, but it happens -- not just to government, but to businesses as well. That's why you see more and more conference centers popping up as opposed to hotel only meeting places.

The concern here is how they pay for this overpriced shit. Businesses pay voluntarily with profits, government uses money it steals from people.

Agreed. Many companies, like the one I work for, have really cut back in these areas in the current economy. Government should never have been in the situation to begin with.
