When the local chapter went on strike against Northwest Airlines, they swore they would negotiate "relentlessly". Their idea of negotiations was to present an insane proposal, which was promptly rejected, and then to walk away from the table and not go back. They told the folks on the picket line that there was no strike fund, so nobody was going to get a penny as long as the strike lasted. Fact was, there was plenty of money for a strike fund, it was just funding the union leadership instead. UAW gave them $800,000 in support, but after "processing it", the union only gave each striker about $120.
Cliffs Notes: Poorly run union that was run by a bunch of crooks (big shock there) convinced union members that striking was in their best interest and then they cost 4300 people their jobs and took off with several million in union funds.
