Russia's new stealth fighter jet made its public debut Tuesday, according to state-run news source RIA Novosti.

The Sukhoi T-50, developed collaboratively by Russia and India, appeared at the MAKS 2011 air show in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

Gen. Alexander Zelin, head of the Russian air force, told RIA Novosti he expects the T-50 prototype to be ready in 2013, with "mass-produced aircraft" arriving in 2014 or 2015.

The aircraft is expected to become a staple of airborne defense for both Russia and India, Mikhail Pogosyan, head of Russia's United Aircraft Corp., told RIA Novosti.

"The T-50 will be the newest main plane both for the Russian and the Indian air force," Pogosyan said.

The article from the state-run media source says the Sukhoi T-50 cost the two governments about $6 billion to develop, with India shouldering about 35% of the cost. It is intended to match the U.S. F-22 raptor.

            Lol. So true.

But seriously, they'll be ramping up prodiction the same time we'll be losing what's left of the f22 fleet to attrition...

              Sucks to be us

The Russians are just doing what they've always done.....

Let us do the hard and really expensive work and then they copy it a few years later.

Anyway, the ability of this fighter to match the Raptor is not in it's maneuverability, power, or even it's stealth characteristics.

It's in the Radar and avionics....

and as you would think, the test plane does not have the production AESA radar or avionics at this time.... and will probably be quite some time before it does.

Anyway, I hope the folks on the Hill are happy about killing the Raptor production line at 187 in favor of an aircraft with less air to air capability (F-35)....

              Oh, and one final thought...
Elections and shitty economies have consequences.... This is but one of them....

Been doing it since the 50's. Just about ever passenger, fighter, and spacecraft they have are a direct copy of ours. It's a lot cheaper that way. If history is any determinant of the quality - it's a paper tiger, navigation and avionics that are 20 years outdated.

Cancel the F35? Uh, you do realize the F22 has no air-to-ground capability, right? You cant exactly fit GBUs in that ordinance bay.

On a secnd look, it doesn't look like it possesses thrust vectoring capability. Can someone on in the know check on that?
