  • U.S. To Deny Taiwan New F-16 Fighters

TAIPEI - Bowing to Chinese pressure, the U.S. will deny Taiwan's request for 66 new F-16C/D fighter aircraft, a Taiwan Ministry of National Defense (MND) official said.
An armed U.S.-built F-16 fighter takes off during a drill in April. A Taiwan Ministry of National Defense official says Taipei will not be able to purchase new F-16s and is “so disappointed” in the U.S. decision. (Sam Yeh / Agence France-Presse)

"We are so disappointed in the United States," he said.

Taiwan is always a sore subject. We should sell the components to South Korea, along with AEGIS cruisers and let them put it all together for resell to Taiwan.

There may be some cuts to the F-35 but it won't be cancelled. They still need people to build it. The F-35 isn't just a US DoD program. It is funded by several other countries. Also, the US has no alternative.

The biggest cut to the F-35 will likely be the alternative engine program which is a huge friggin waste of money.

I thought they already cut the funding for the alternative engine....

Anyway, I've heard at least 1 country has already dropped it and the Aussies just put out a statement that they may decide to go with more Superbugs next year if the F-35 doesn't start shaping up in one form or another.

IMO the F-35B will be dead on arrival and we will probably see a large F-22-like decrease in order numbers before its all said and done.

Will we see F-35s? Most likely.... but not in the numbers or capabilities originally advertised.... and its gonna be nasty come budget time.

The DOD and LockMart have totally screwed the pooch with the management of the project.

The only reason its still around is because they already stopped F-22 production and they have no other alternative.

                Gonna be interesting to watch....

The Integrated Power Package had some issues so they grounded the test fleet for investigation.

The IPP combines the functions performed by an auxiliary power unit, emergency power system and environmental controls....

On a nowhere near related note, the F-22 fleet is still grounded from a pilot safety related OBOGS problem...
