I read an article a while back where they tested the Volt and in the cold winter, they got 35 mile range...that shit wont cut it in TX

...another ranting on crap fuels of today...
When I was 11 years old (1990) my dad had an 82 Suburban with the craptastical 6.2l diesel. He was able to haul a full load of Boy Scouts, gear, and enclosed trailer full of gear at an average speed of 75 mph all the way to Cimarron, NM and back while still getting 22 MPG.
Now, folks are lucky to hit 15MPG while worried about over heating their Duramaxx at those speeds with that much of a load.

As for the 6.2L, I had a 1985 long bed 1/2 ton back in HS that damn thing would get 30MPG plus on the hwy no shit, but it loved to eat transmissions and would not pull the hat of your head.
I am guessing that the 1985 truck weighed around 5k now my 2007 2500HD weighs 7200lbs and gets 20MPG in town thats not bad but would be better with better fuel.

I have never been able to understand the american auto manufactures when it comes to making MPG efficient vehicles. Is it that hard? if it was up to me and I was in charge of one of these companies, I would offer every single vehicle in the line up with an optional diesel engine (with exception to high performance cars). most cars already have multiple engine options, how hard would it be to offer a diesel engine option?
