  • Obama: Auto industry shouldn't make SUVs

Didn't he just get a couple new million dollar buses and ride around in a limo that gets under 10 miles a gallon surrounded by SUV's?

Obama to automakers: ‘You can’t just make money on SUVs and trucks’
By Andrew Restuccia - 08/15/11 02:37 PM ET

The country’s automakers should ditch their focus on SUVs and trucks in favor of smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, President Obama said Monday.

“You can’t just make money on SUVs and trucks,” Obama said during a town hall forum in Cannon Falls, Minn. “There is a place for SUVs and trucks, but as gas prices keep on going up, you have got to understand the market. People are going to try to save money.”

Obama has positioned the revival and reshaping of the auto industry as a major part of his administration’s push to improve the economy and create jobs.

“When I came into office they were talking about the liquidation of GM and Chrysler, and a lot of folks said you can’t help them, and it’s a waste of the government’s money to try and help them,” Obama said Monday. “But what I said was, we can’t afford to lose up to a million jobs in this country, particularly in the Midwest.”

Obama was speaking at the start of a three-day bus tour of the Midwest. He will visit Decorah, Iowa, later in the day.

The president said his administration “turned around” the U.S. auto industry and is calling on automakers to change the way they do business.

“They are gaining market share for the first time in years, but what we said was, ‘If we are going to help you, then you have also got to change your ways,’ ” he said.

The White House unveiled first-ever fuel efficiency rules for heavy-duty trucks last week. The standards come after the administration ratcheted up fuel economy standards for cars and light-duty trucks.

The administration negotiated the standards in a series of high-stakes closed-door meetings with industry. In the end, the White House won the endorsement of major automakers and truck companies.

Obama has touted the new standards as “the single most important step we’ve ever taken as a nation to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”

Later Monday, Obama touted the administration’s efforts to boost electric vehicles and advanced battery technology.

“That is the kind of approach that we have to take: Using the private sector, understanding that ultimately the private sector is going to be creating jobs, but also understanding that government can be an effective partner in that process, and nowhere is that more true than in rural America.”

What I would reply with is: Well, if you dumb motherfuckers would have let them go out of business years ago, all of this shit would have been fully sorted out by now....

FUCK THAT! Who the hell does he think he is? Let the market/people decide what they want to purchase, screw limiting our options. This is America goddamnit.

Perhaps he should leave "understanding the market" to people with business experience and he should stick to "organizing communities."

If there was no market for SUVs, they wouldnt be produced.

Well if they stop making SUV's then parents like me with 4 or more kids will have a fun time toting them around. Minivans suck btw!

Im all for fuel efficiency and alternate fuels but not when they are shoved down our throats against our will.

I think the biggest issue with car makers has always been the HP wars. Now dont get me wrong on the Camaro, Corvette,Stangs etc screw it, let them do what they can do, they get decent fuel numbers. But do you really need a 500 HP truck to get things done. Hell my 95 7.3 would pull a house down the road at 65 mph all day long and get decent MPG. If these dumbfucks would have put half the effort into mileage as they do HP then we would not have all the bitching about SUV's. There is no reason they should not have a 300 HP, 35 MPG, truck or SUV on the market right now. The ECO Boost is a step in the right direction but still came way to late. They could also put out a 4 cylinder version say maybe 250-300 HP that got way more MPG and I bet the would sell like hot cakes in the trucks. Hell I had turbo cars in the late 80's early 90's that were pretty damn fast and got great mileage but they got away from that.

Part of the issue is the fuel. We get less MPG's with what we have available at the pump. I've always questioned how we can reduce emissions but used MORE fuel at the same time. It doesn't add up. I will say this, I know a guy who runs red farm diesel in his late model cummins, and gets higher MPG's than he can with regular buy 5 -10 mpg.

You need to realize that more HP is not what kills MPG. A 4cyl full size truck would get worse MPG then most V8's do. The ECO boost is a great idea but for all that technology under the hood it only gets about 1-2 more MPG than the 4.6L. The biggest killer of MPG is the EPA with all its pollution bull shit. When I took the sulfur converter off my Duramax it gained almost 2 MPG in town, then I programed it later that year (which added HP) it gained another 1 MPG.

Another big factor is the shit for fuel we get now days. Ethanol kills economy and ULD on average killed about 10-15% MPG from Diesel rigs. When the newer Diesels go into their Regen. mode they get terrible MPG I know guys that go from 17MPG down to 12 or 14MPG.

Case in point: the EPA-mandated MTBE fuel additive debacle. Intended to reduce air pollution, it instead added significantly to water pollution.

And anyone using E85 in their flex fuel car or truck is an idiot. You save on average .30 to lose 15-30% MPG. For example my moms Tahoe gets 15 MPG in town on gas and 12 on E85 do the math.

                        10 gal of gas @ 3.30= 33.00 nets 150 miles

                        10 gal of E85 @ 3.00= 30.00 nets 120 miles

You need 12.5 gal to go the same distance on E85

                        12.5 gal of E85 @ 3.00= 37.50

More horsepower is a byproduct of increased efficiency. Think back to the mid 80s when economy cars came with 1.8L 85-90hp engines and were good for 25-30mpg. Now that same displacement in bigger and heavier cars will deliver 30+mpg but they all make at least 140hp and some are up to 180. If you detuned them to make 85hp they won't see an increase in economy. Now take all the extra weight out of modern cars for safety regulations and use the modern powertain and you'll have a good jump in economy and performance.

That being said though would you rather have a head on collision driving an 85 Cavalier or a 2005 Cobalt? That Cavalier will basically explode and probably burst into flames and you'll have a rocker cover wedged into your spleen. In the Cobalt the engine will drop down beneath you and the crumple zones will do their job, along with half a dozen airbags and you'll be walking to the ambulance.

I will stick with my F250 in a wreck. LOL

So you guys are saying they couldnt build lower HP motors that get better gas mileage and still pull your truck around fine. I guess I see the weight issue now days but damn. Oh and yes I agree with all the emssions BS and new fuels. I can even tell a big difference in summer and winter blends.
