Of course the cost of living in SF (or wherever you are) plays a huge role in that. You can't touch an average house - say 1500 sq feet - in a decent neighborhood for less than $800k here. Now, my boss makes anywhere from $2MM to $3MM (depending on how badly we fat cat, cigar smoking bankers want to fleece the public at that point in time) a year, and has for 15 years.

That's "upper class", but he still looks at people we deal with on a regular basis and says, "that person is on a whole other level".
Right. It's all a relative term. When they're talking about "classes," then you're comparing by the percentages of the rest of the population.

Rich and poor is a perspective. As long as I bring in more than I spend, I'm at a level of comfort since I know that is ahead of the curve.

Very true, and on-point. I guess in the theme of this thread, to look at someone who makes $90k a year regardless of circumstances and call them "well off" or "wealthy" is pretty ridiculous. Saying that it's "lower middle class" is also pretty ridiculous, given the statistics. That's the only point I was trying to make, the median household income in the US is well-below that.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

I think we'll be seeing more articles like this to create larger divides between social-economic classes. Look at London.

        Order out of chaos.

Jesus man, I saw an article the other day that was really intriguing. It was a graph of some sort of income statistic for the US. Of course, I started fucking around with it. Charting the median versus mean statistics for income here were mind-blowing. That wasn't the point of the article (it was focusing on mean), but playing around with it and trying to understand the data behind the charts really blew my mind. I showed my buddy at work, and he was like holy shit. Key takeaway was, when you start using median for a lot of data instead of mean you really see the separation. Politics, ideology, etc aside (I don't care to get into that stuff the vast majority of the time), it was a "Damn!" set of data points.

Using the median, actually splitting the real numbers, you can take out that separation in classes. I can only imagine.

I think I'd beat up that guy just on sheer principle if he lived anywhere near me.
