Mobs in London and cops hiding

One of my old admins lives there in London and she said there were "rioters" right down the road from her house setting shit on fire and not a cop to be seen anywhere near. The cops over there don't carry firearms unless part of a SWAT team or anti-terrorism squad. Most of these "rioters" are really anarchists or shitbags just using this environment as an excuse to tear shit up.

That's what I was going to say - I don't blame them. What's an unarmed couple of cops going to do against an angry mob?

When I went to Greece in 2009 - a few months after the Dec 2008 riots - I hung out at Syntagma Square in Athens for a bit. I noticed that the police on foot typically hung out in groups of 4 or 5 and carried submachine guns.

I don't think they'd blame unarmed police for scattering, either.

While standing behind a police officer in Scotland I cracked a joke. I looked at his belt, and he had nothing but mace, no club or anything. I said "Great Scot man! Someone's knicked your weapon!" Other Americans found it funny, the cop did not.
