If its a defect, then it should be looked on, medically, as any defect. They're no different from redheads. I am pretty sure, he meant that in the past tense, as in how aids exploded in American gay communities in the late seventies-early eighties.

I am also pretty sure everyone except you read it as that also.

The CDC didn't even know about HIV/AIDS until '81, so it wasn't tracked until after then. Hell, they didn't even have a name for it until July of '82.

And did it ever occur to you that it exploded in the gay communities vs hetero communities because there was no risk of pregnancy, so they didn't use any protection? Or perhaps it was the intravenous drug use that was prevalent during that time period.

It was well known before 1980, it was called 'the gay cancer' or 'the gay plague'. It was traced back to a single gay flight attendant from which it spread in the late 70's. While IV drug use may have added to the numbers, it was directly traced to the gay communities in California.

If in fact he meant the past tense, he needs to learn how to communicate better. But for now it's best to not attempt to dive into what he meant and stick to what he said.
