Share if you've served Iraq/Afghanistan v.soviets

Buddy of mine who has spent most of his time since 9/11 in Iraq/Afghanistan was home this weekend. He's decided he's not re-enlisting anymore and is leaving the military.

Something he said that really stuck out, whenever they contacted a village for the first time, the people there generally thought they were soviets.

These people aren't even living in 2011 or even 2001. Who are we fighting and why are they fighting us?

Anyone else want to share experiences the rest of us would find surprising???
