  • Has anyone felt let down by their 'church family'?

A few months ago the position for Children's Director came open at our church. This something that my wife was very passionate about, and it is a job that she had been doing for the past two years since the one that was being paid for it was useless and could not handle it. This woman could not plan even the simplest of events, and she did not seem to even like children, and definately could not control them.
Well she decided to resign from her position before getting fired. The moment she resigned it seemed like everyone in the church came to my wife to ask if she will be applying for the job, including both the head pastor and the associate pastor, and the guy that is head of the committee that would be making the decision. Needless to say she thought she had a ton of support. a couple days after she turned in her resume the pastor told her that against the original plan the district is making him interview a few other people, but it was just a formality and the job was basically hers. A side note before he was transferred to our church last year my wife and I went to his old church to visit with him a little. He thought my wife was the children's director until we told him otherwise.

My wife is not the kind of person that gets excited about many things. She got her hopes up high for this job as we liked the church it was one that our children could really grow in. My wife also was the VBS director for two years running, they both were a smashing success. She really wanted this job since it is something she could do part time and hold another job. We were both laid off last year and have been looking for jobs since then.

Her first interview was three hours long it was with the pastor, associate pastor, and the head of the staff /parish relations committee. The second was to tell her they hired someone else and that she wasn't as great of a fit as they thought.
She came home in tears not even regular sniffle sniffle tear tear, she was sobbing uncontrollably. I just happened to be on Facebook at the time and I made a posting about feeling fucked by them, and someone made a comparison to the corporate world and I said there were cocksuckers everywhere. Right after she came home I went to the church to speak to the minister and he would not see me. The following Friday the pastor called us to arrange a meeting the next evening. What was supposed to be a meeting between me and the pastor turned into a three on one attempted dressing down. When I asked why she wasn't qualified last week when she was before that. The answer I got was the ad stated that child development degrees and people that had held the position for pay before would be given favor. When I asked who goes to look for the ad when they have already turned in their resume on word of mouth, and I asked them why they didn't tell her when she gave them her resume. After I asked why they told her she had the job in the bag then change their minds. They refused to talk about it anymore. I mentioned that I felt that a member of the church who needs the job should have gotten favor over a non member who was just changing jobs. I was told that I was stupid for believing that. I guess I was stupid for counting on the charity of my own church. I pointed out that I have given favor to guy that need the job vs the one that had one, and I had been given the favor before.
They got to the real reason they wanted the meeting. The assoc pastor starts whinning about how she knew what was in my heart and my FB post was not it. At that point I stood up. I told them that I have apologized to the people that I felt I owed it to, and this three person bitch squad was not one of them. As a closing I did tell them how our family would not darken the halls of that church again. So now we are doing what I hate church shopping.

On a karmic side note the person they hired pissed enough people off that she was fired within six weeks. They have not been able to fill the position, and the people that happily volunteered in the children's program with my wife have stopped.

Sorry for the long post I guess I needed to get that off my chest.

Churches are like any other organization; corporate or social. There are the cocksuckers and the motherfuckers, and then there are some decent people just had a hard time finding them there. Personally I take the don't volunteer for shit there will be no shit stance. But I got sucked in to it here.

I will continue looking for the one I fit in to.

Fortunately we're surrounded by decent people in ours. Volunteering where possible has also worked out well there.

This was a fairly small church. Average Sunday attendance around 200. I also cannot stand large churches.

I've been watching a lot of Deadwood lately, and I've got to say. I would go to church if it were like Deadwood. Al Swearengen for Childrens Director, or GTFO.

At least in my church experience, it's people talking shit about people that aren't there that Sunday.

That sounds like this board in many cases.

That sucks, but do you really feel you had the right to confront them over the decision they made over not hiring your wife? do you think there's a chance your vision/judgement of her is clouded and they perhaps see a different side than you? just playing both sides.
