Florida Gov. Rick Scott signs law requiring welfare recipients to take drug test, ACLU objects

If Floridians want welfare, they better make sure they are drug-free.

Republican Gov. Rick Scott signed a bill on Tuesday that requires benefit recipients to undergo drug testing.

Applicants for the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program who test positive for illicit substances won't be eligible for the funds for a year, or until they undergo treatment.

Those who fail a second time would be banned from receiving the funds for three years.

"While there are certainly legitimate needs for public assistance, it is unfair for Florida taxpayers to subsidize drug addiction," Scott said. "This new law will encourage personal accountability and will help to prevent the misuse of tax dollars."

If welfare candidates pass the drug screening, they'll be reimbursed for the test.

The legislation instantly came under a barrage of criticism from the American Civil Liberties Union and several of the Sunshine State's Democrats. They argued the bill is an invasion of privacy.

When you look back on changes made to systems, you sometimes wonder how it functioned for as long as it did, the way it did.

Hopefully, more states will follow suit. With any luck, this will drastically reduce (worst case at least curb & plateau) the number of people currently on welfare/state assistance.
Ronald Reagan:"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it."

Guess who funds treatment for their drug addiction.

I agree. Also, the 'Temporary Assistance for Needy Families' (cash outlay) is one of the more stricter benefits that can be had, if comes with time limits, verification of where the funds were spent, etc.

At least it was like 15 years ago.

ACLU objects. Do they just not care at all that anyone who looks at them can see exactly what they really are?

I have no problem with welfare IF there is an actual need for it.

I wish family, friends and the local community would do the job welfare does, but they don't any more. So welfare is "needed" for those that struggle through times.

wait.......you mean now i gotta jump through hoops to get free money???? that aint fair at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s funny that the ACLU is mad about this yet they are fine with people having to take a drug test to get a job which supports the people who don’t have a job.

                      god bless.

People in need get by just fine in other countries, without welfare assistance.
