That'll really boost the economy. Add more taxes to fuel, hurting the sales of large trucks...like those big fuckers that haul all of our goods across the country. I'm sure raising the fuel prices that much won't have any effect on how much those goods cost.

The broad picture seems to be out on this one.

I find it super easy to not buy anymore GM products, because I've had nothing but sub-par experiences with them in the 2 I've bought over the last 10 years.

Beyond that, taxing gas even heavier does not make sense. I understand the point behind using more fuel efficient cars/trucks and such. However, forcing consumers to do so via fuel prices seems like a pussy way out.

Make good fuel efficient cars/trucks/SUVs and people will buy them. This is sort of like Hi-Point saying cut the police force, so crime will go up and maybe their sales will go up. Not quite that absurd, but still...

That too, but I was uneducated on their prices.

In Akerson's case with GM, he was first appointed to their board by none other than Obama. No wonder he'd fall in line with the current administration's agenda.

I said we should do something like that and everyone got all bent out of shape. Saying you can't do that, and the gub'ment doesn't need to intervene.

The main point is that if the government REALLY wants to boost the sale of small, fuel efficient cars, they should raise gasoline prices through taxation. It is proven to work. Look at small car sales in the last few months. The Fiesta was having a subpar sales year until prices started going north of $3 a gallon. Now it is the top selling sub compact.

Europe has been doing it for years and it has had the desired effect...

Now, I'm not saying I support this. I'm only saying that they are absolutely correct in what they are saying. I'm also pointing out that Akerson is not alone in the industry in pushing for this. Every manufacturer would much rather have higher gas taxes than having to deal with CAFE mandates.
I'm pretty much on board with all that. The other point thaat can be made is that if fuel prices go up and stay up, the cost of the smaller and more fuel efficient cars will too. Being that it costs less to make a fiesta than an expedition, the car co's make more proffit per unit.
