  • GM chief pushing for higher gas taxes

Detroit — General Motors Co. CEO Dan Akerson wants the federal gas tax boosted as much as $1 a gallon to nudge consumers toward more fuel-efficient cars, and he's confident the government will soon shed its remaining 26 percent stake in the once-bankrupt automaker.

"I actually think the government will be out this year — within the next 12 months, hopefully within the next six months," Akerson said in a two-hour interview with The Detroit News last week.

Seems to fall inline with the administration. Since GM's largest profit source is the trucks and SUV's an additional dollar in taxes will result in consumers dumping those products. The ones that have to keep them sure won't buy new ones and they'll cut back in other areas. I sincerely wonder how some of these people rise to top positions.

It's all about who you know. Akerson works with the Carlyle Group, lots of money and political influence there. You can get perfect grades and every award possible and get a Phd from MIT or Caltech and not make it as far in life as as someone that partied with the right people and barely scraped by at Harvard.

Akerson got his Masters from the London School of Economics, coincidentally the same place George Soros got his. I'm not saying there is a conspiracy but they have secret societies just like we have here.

This is the problem when the government owns your ass. You will say/do anything to kiss their ass so you can boost sales in order to pay them off. What a circle-jerk.

Don't buy a GM then.... Who is going to buy a fuel efficient gm product anyhow? Is he asking for his company to go back down the shitter?

So it sounds like GM has an incurable STD, given to it by dirty politicians.

I'd still buy a GM product built before 2000.

Ford's Alan Mulally has stated the exact same thing. Even Bob Lutz has mentioned it.

The main point is that if the government REALLY wants to boost the sale of small, fuel efficient cars, they should raise gasoline prices through taxation. It is proven to work. Look at small car sales in the last few months. The Fiesta was having a subpar sales year until prices started going north of $3 a gallon. Now it is the top selling sub compact.

Europe has been doing it for years and it has had the desired effect...

Now, I'm not saying I support this. I'm only saying that they are absolutely correct in what they are saying. I'm also pointing out that Akerson is not alone in the industry in pushing for this. Every manufacturer would much rather have higher gas taxes than having to deal with CAFE mandates.

Why that generation specifically? They didn't really start kicking ass in the horsepower war until 2001.

A really fucking stupid idea to put it mildly. The last thing we need is higher gas prices. Now, if they want to do this and then set the margin requirements for speculation on oil at 100% then they might have a decent idea. But just adding $1 to the price of gas in the name of "going green!" would be a total fucking disaster.

Btw, GM will be bankrupt again within ten years and the government is going to lose $50 billion on this bailout. These idiots running GM don't have a god damn clue.

Just another reason why I have no intention of owning anything produced by Gub'ment Motors.

I like the camaros... But I won't own one.

Well by that I meant anything pre '73, and any truck built in the 90's, not cars. The 90's GM trucks were some of the best trucks ever made. The cars of the same era were shit boxes. I would'nt buy any of their late model cars, except maybe c6 z06.
