A simple review of the latest news shows that yes, LGBTQ people are routinely beat up/murdered for the fact of who they are - I see it on the news all of the time. And what about ft. worth's recent incident at the rainbow room with cops beating a gay customer?

Belief or non-belief in God, or religious beliefs, has nothing to do with many people stigmatizing gays. That is a gross oversimplification and incorrect assumption on your part. Is it considered a sin by many religions? Yes, and so are many other things.

In many cases it has nothing to do with religion. The reasons people stigmatize gays can be varied; they may be uncomfortable around them and crack jokes to ease their own distress, they may want someone to look down on so their own miserable lives seem better, or they may just not know how and when to mind their own business.

I agree with you that a religious angle is often used in opposition to gay marriage and to a lesser extent gay lifestyles, but all religious folk certainly don't hold a monopoly on intolerance.
